5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest albums EVer !
If you want to hear an album that was recorded in a time when expert production, expert engineering, expert musicianship and superb songcrafting existed, this one will surely serve as a prime example.

It's so hilarious to hear pompous music critics continually squawk the mantra that "the mid-seventies were bloated and stale and therefore punk was ushered in"...

3.0 out of 5 stars A good effort...
When a new member comes into a band, there is often a 'honeymoon' period of increased creativity and better playing. We have some of that here.

This album is better than New England in one sense. But it is also a 'new' Wishbone Ash. Something has changed. While Andy still controls the tone and temper of the band, something is altogether different here. And...

If you want to hear an album that was recorded in a time when expert production, expert engineering, expert musicianship and superb songcrafting existed, this one will surely serve as a prime example.

It's so hilarious to hear pompous music critics continually squawk the mantra that "the mid-seventies were bloated and stale and therefore punk was ushered in" or words to that effect. Meanwhile albums such as this continually serve to prove those idiots wrong. I admit bands like Yes got a little over the top during this era, but "There's The Rub" is a must-have for anyone who appreciates masterpieces that will stand the test of time, regardless of what the critics think is cool this week. Every note on this album means something. Not one note is stale or cliche'. The tones are heavenly, yet still rocks in all the right ways. The opening song "Silver Shoes" sounds like no other song ever written, and is delivered with incredible confidence and flair, which sets the tone for the rest of the album that sounds like nothing that's ever been produced before, nor since.

I would love to hear from any of you who buy this CD on my word and agree that it's a masterpiece upon hearing.

5.0 out of 5 stars This album represents a radical change of Ash style, February 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: There's the Rub (Audio CD)
Following "Wishbone Four", "There's the Rub" appeared with a change in the band's lineup. Ted Turner left the band to go to Peru, and Laurie Wisefield joined. The sound also change and sweet distorted guitars became the distinctive mark in this CD. Songs as beatiful as "Persiphone" and as intricate as "F.U.B.B" transport you through the space of twin guitars and spectacular bass lines. Don't miss it!

'There's the rub' introduces fans to the amazing talent of new guitarist Laurie Wisefield. The man can cook as this disc shows. Every track is great. There is some very serious guitarwork here-amazing solos- Silver Shoes, Persephone, Lady Jay and of course F-U-B-B.'Lady Jay' will go down in history as one of the best ballads ever recorded, check out the solo at the end of the track, brilliant as it segues into the closing track. The band got the formula right with this one. This cd begs for a proper remastering. A must-have for fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars INCOMPARABLE GUITAR WORK, November 25, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: There's the Rub (Audio CD)
For over 20 years, every time I've played this album for non-Ash fans, they've completely flipped. "Who is that?!" You won't find better guitar work anywhere and the sound is as fresh as if it were recorded yesterday. You'd have to be dead not to find this album utterly superb.

5.0 out of 5 stars There's No Rub!, October 11, 2005

This review is from: There's Rub (Reis) (Audio CD)
This is the first Wishbone album to feature Laurie Wisefield from the band Home on guitar replacing Ted Turner. This is also the first line up change from the classic period that gave us the Argus years. There's the Rub is a combination of the classic Wishbone sound and their self perceived "Live Rock Blues Band" approach that they tried on Wishbone 4. It is a bit of a hybrid to straddle both sounds and is far more successful in this than Wishbone 4. Some of the classic sounding tunes include Persephone for example and the rockers are Hometown, Silver Shoes. Excellent production and a very clean drum sound. Here Steve Upton showcases his new "in the pocket" style for the first time. It is clean and strong (killer snare drume sound!) but I still prefer his Keith Moon style that he used on the earlier albums. Wisefield adds a smooth voice and very tasty guitar to accompany Andy Powell. This is one of their best post Argus albums and their inspiration is obvious. Bone On!

5.0 out of 5 stars oh dear... I made a very bad, regrettable mistake, November 20, 2010
By
This review is from: There's the Rub (Audio CD)
I made the assumption that Wishbone Ash turned into mediocre soft rock immediately after Argus was released... oh my goodness I was wrong! I can't turn back time and correct this mistake, and for that, I feel sick to my stomach.

Plain and simple- There's the Rub absolutely positively *rules*. If you like your guitar solos indescribably beautiful and your songwriting tearful and powerfully moving... well look no further than THIS extremely underrated masterpiece.

The only reason I'm not crying while listening to this album right now is because I'm sitting in a really cold room, and I'm too darn stubborn to turn on the furnace. Hey, the economy's in bad shape and money is somewhat of an issue right now! However, it should be noted that money should NOT be an issue when it concerns spending a little more money than you normally would to buy There's the Rub. It's okay to spend 20 bucks on it, seriously.

Let's talk about the highlights. "Hometown" reminds me of the splendid songwriting that more popular bands like the James Gang were doing around the time this Wishbone Ash album was released. Those vocals are absolutely gorgeous and yes... even though you'll think I'm exaggerating, this is seriously some of the best hard rock ever laid down on tape.

Wishbone Ash obviously had a talent for really connecting with their listeners, and perhaps that's why they've never slipped off the radar over 40 years later. That speaks volumes how important they've been to their loyal fans.

The entire album does one thing amazingly well- every single guitar line seems to count for something *huge*. This is a big deal to me because how many times in your life have you heard a boring guitar solo? I bet plenty of times. That's NOT a problem with Wishbone Ash. Never was, never will be.

"Persephone" includes EXACTLY the kind of guitar soloing I'm referring to. The vocal melody itself packs a MEGA huge emotional punch, but the guitar work is delightfully scattered over the entire track in such a way that just makes you think about pure heaven or whatever you consider your own personal perfect situation.

Such an underrated song (and album). Why exactly isn't There's the Rub more popular again? I'd take the guitar playing found here over bands like Pink Floyd ANY day, and that's in no way a disrespectful jab towards those guys either- this kind of guitar playing and songwriting is simply on the same level of flawless quality and stands tall with the best of them.

Then you have a song like "Lady Jay" that makes me wanna cry not *only* because of the anthemic guitar solo in the middle, but more importantly the lyrics that positively shake the ground in pure, honest emotion. Just incredible.

I need to stop listening to people telling me "such and such" started to stink after *insert popular album here*. There's the Rub *is* in the same league as Argus. Those of us fortunate enough to hear it will agree.

5.0 out of 5 stars When Music can be so important as the air we breath..., July 25, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: There's the Rub (Audio CD)
There was a time when compose music was one exercise of faith, sensibility and love to music.

Unfortunatelly this time is gone but if one desire to remember how that time was, please hear the music of Wishbone Ash, mainly this CD. The electric double guitars delicate sound mixed with the inspired compositions made this work a prove that not only classical music can achieve the state of art but realy the pure, genuine and good rock'n'roll can fill the first place sometimes. And hearing this "There's the Rub" I bet that everybody will enjoy and breath its music as it was the real air surrounding us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wishbone's best, May 18, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: There's the Rub (Audio CD)
On this album, Wishbone Ash managed to compose some of their best songs and tighten up on the arrangements--with the result that this album sounds like no other of theirs. It rocks harder and sounds better, with none of the 'wimpiness' that marred their earlier catchy work. This was the first album without Ted Turner. His replacement, Laurie Wisefield, must have had something to do with the improvement. Unfortunately, the band couldn't sustain it, as this was probably their last excellent album. After 25 years or whatever, this album is still in my 'essential' bin. By the way, their 2nd best album was the one released right before There's the Rub--Wishbone Four. For some reason, the 'best of' compilations tend to focus on their first few albums, containing popular tracks such as Throw Down the Sword, etc. As I said, that stuff is very catchy, but lacks a necessary bit of edge or hardness...
