4.0 out of 5 stars Its Gorgeous, January 18, 2000
This review is from: There's Something Going on (Audio CD)
I was recommended this record by a friend and having only previously heard "You're Gorgeous" and "Candygirl", I didn't really know what to expect. It, like a lot of great albums, covers a great many genres. Only "If you'll be mine" echoes of the two singles I mentioned. "First man on the Sun" has something Happy Mondays-esque about it and "Take me back" is similar in many ways to Portishead, snarling and swirling with menace. Stephen Jones alternatively growls and falsettoes his way through the album, peaking on the quite sublime "Back Together". This is a quintessentially English album and its questionable how it will be received in the US, but if you're open minded, give it a go and let yourself peak into the mind of one of England's best and most creative songwriters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sinister, but beautiful, September 25, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: There's Something Going on (Audio CD)
In many ways this sixth album from the unique mind of Stephen Jones (who is effectively Babybird) is a sinister, but beautiful collection of songs. Enjoy his swipe at Jerry Springer on 'Bad Old Man' and dance along (if you can) to the flamenco intro to 'All Men are Evil'. There is also a tune that sounds as if it was stolen from Echo & the Bunnymen 'First Man on the Sun'. In between however are the more sombre moments with darker subjects being covered. Don't let that put you off this is an intelligent almost satirical but at the same time emotional and melodic album. There is certainly something going on don't be fooled by the cuddly duck on the cover...
