There's A Song In The Air,
By A Customer
This review is from: There's a Song in the Air [ORIGINAL RECORDINGS REMASTERED] (Audio CD)
There's a song in the air. What a wonderful title for a CD album of Allan Jones. "Donkey Serenade" opens with that line and is synonymous with Allan Jones. The CD has some of the finest artists of our time. Jones had such a great Welsh tenor voice. Along with him can be heard such greats as Kitty Carlisle, Irene Dunne,Jeanette MacDonald, Judy Garland and Mary Martin. I think it would be hard to find another CD with so many big stars on it. I am as you must have guessed a senior citizen and have many memories associated with the melodies in the CD. Most are from movies. The music is incredible and Carlisle and Jones' duet of "Alone" is well worth listening to. Thine Alone, Falling In Love with Love, Sweethearts, Donkey Serenade are just a few of the songs we love to hear. I bought this CD for myself and another friends of mine who were also delighted to listen to the wonderful music and great voices from the past. I would recommend this Cd for all who love misic regardless of their age.

There's A Song In The Air gives us a great CD of Allan Jones's big hits. Although he is largely forgotten today, Allan Jones enjoyed a good career in Hollywood singing in many films. His voice is very pleasant and when you hear him sing you can tell why he was famous. The quality of the sound on this CD is rather good and the artwork reflects good judgment.
The album begins with Allan Jones singing one of Irving Berlin's greatest hits, `A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody," which is, I assure you, worth the price of admission alone! This ballad comes from the soundtrack of the movie entitled The Great Ziegfeld and the lush musical arrangement goes along with Allan's vocals very well. There's another great tune when Allan Jones sings "Alone" with Kitty Carlisle. Kitty sounds a bit shrill; but Allan balances her out to help make this number from A Night At The Opera much easier to remember. Similarly, "Make Believe" comes from the soundtrack of the 1936 version of Show Boat. Allan's excellent diction enhances his performance and that's grand. "Tomorrow Is Another Day" offers up a very pretty melody and the strings sound divine. Allan Jones delivers this without a single off note and he sounds like the true natural talent he was when you listen to "Tomorrow Is Another Day." Listen also for Alan Jones to do a great job on "The Donkey Serenade;" this song is first heard in full from the movie entitled The Firefly and then we soon get the reprise of this tune which Allan does with Jeanette MacDonald. Allan's voice is truly operatic on these songs. "Down On Melody Farm" comes from the movie Everybody Sing; Allan sounds great and he teams up with Judy Garland, Lynne Carver and Reginald Gardiner for this number. "Ah! Sweet Mystery Of Life" comes from a movie called The Great Victor Herbert--Allan sings this with the legendary Mary Martin and this is clearly a major highlight of this album. I really enjoy "Ah! Sweet Mystery Of Life;" Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy must have been proud! I'm Falling In Love With Someone" from Naughty Marietta sounds fantastic when Allan Jones sings it; and the music for this ballad is very well arranged. Similarly, "Falling In Love With Love" features Allan Jones squarely front and center--right where he always belonged! The album ends very nicely with Allan Jones performing "Sweethearts" from the movie of the same name--and it leaves you wanting more. The liner notes offer an informative essay about Allan Jones; and I can only hope that this rather good CD comes back into print soon. This is a great single CD compilation of Jones's work as well as a solid starter CD for people just discovering the artistry of Allan Jones. If you like this you should consider other CDs by Allan Jones.

This is an excellent collection of songs from the film soundtracks of
Allan Jones films from the 1930's and 1940's . Any fan of Allan Jones songs should also order The Donkey Serenade C.D. These are original recordings taken from 78 r.p.m. masters. I am very pleased with both of these C.D.'s Thank you once again for having these available.
