Review

Laughed till I cried, couldn't put it down. My mom kept taking it from me and reading it also. A great look at what some pilots go through while flying. Insightful for someone like me who is a non-pilot. --Patsy

Bought the book, as Tom is a fellow pilot. Haven't seen it since as my family, neighbors and relatives keep passing it amongst themselves. They say it's hilarious. --Terry

An easy read. A funny read. An great look at what pilots go through doing their job. Not all glamorous as we would think. --Rob

Tom Lee, being a pilot, has written a book of his experiences as such. He tells this tales in pilot lingo, (there is a glossary included) that gives you a birds-eye view of what goes on in the cockpit. I thoroughly enjoy reading the various situations and events he found himself in. I was surprised to read how many times things go wrong on a flight that the passengers were not aware of and for me, that is okay. My favorite were the emails commenting on his time in Vietnam working for Air Mekong, what an interesting mosaic of the local culture. Another was the tale on how things work when these guys are transporting organs for a life saving transplant, very touching and utterly amazing at how everyone comes together to get the job done. And lastly, I'll always have that mental image of Tom Lee flying along side an eagle, simply majestic.

Written in a tongue-in-cheek style, there is a sense of self-depreciation that adds to the realism and authenticity to the stories. An underlying theme, though not spoken, is one of a man that has had gratitude for his life and being able to achieve his dreams. This book is many things on many levels, as a humorous book, it gives a few laughs, as a book into the inner workings of the airline industry, an insightful and gritty look , as a book on one man's journey through life, an inspirational read.

Overall, I loved it and this book comes across as very real and sincere as well as entertaining. Tom Lee should get started on a sequel, as I for one would grab a copy.

I’m not a pilot, nor an aircraft enthusiast, but I do have to fly from place to place for business on a somewhat regular basis. I found There's A Turtle on the Runway fully engaging, and entertaining. This book is a collection of anecdotes from the pilot’s perspective. The author tells these stories in such a way to allow the reader to get a “behind the scenes” view of the life of a pilot; how one becomes a pilot, the process of gaining experience, interaction with airline companies and passengers, and many more stories. Since it’s a collection of anecdotes, you can pick up the book, read one or two, and come back to it at any time in the future without missing a beat.

While the topic is in regard to being a pilot, this is a collection of stories about human interaction. It makes the profession of being a pilot more real, and does so in a thoroughly amusing and enjoyable way. I would highly recommend this book.

I choose this book as I'm a pilot myself. It's great to hear some of the stories the pilots live to tell about. So anyone interested in flying should have a quick read of this. It's very easy and funny reading. You won't want to put it down.

I was invited to submit a review of this book and I am glad I was as I would probably never have read it otherwise.

The book is a series of short stories about the author’s experiences surrounding his flying and life events as a wannabe pilot and as a pilot.

The book is engaging, an easy read and may even make you laugh once or twice….it did me.

If you are a pilot or aviation buff, you will probably appreciate the stories even more than I did as a non-pilot. I found the book to be a great diversion to the more heavy reading I generally do. I whole heartedly recommend your reading this book.

This is a easy to read and really accurate book. It's straight forward and funny. This is as close as being able to sit down and talk to and hear stories from a airline pilot. I usually read quite quickly through a book, but I found myself reading slower and taking my time to take in the stories and imagine them in my head. As a pilot some of these things I have seen myself and others I can only imagine the crazy day that they happened on. Towards the end I was sad knowing that the book was coming to an end. You owe it to yourself to read this book and see what life is like as a pilot and hear some of Toms funny stories.

There Is A Turtle On The Runway & Other Flying Stories is a good choice for a lighthearted escape. Tom Lee has written an amusing batch of stories about his life: from his unconventional quest to become a professional pilot, to hilarious adventures once he attains that lofty goal.
He doesn't loose his self-depreciating humor along the way. His prose is easy to read and the stories are just the right length--you can pick up the book in idle moments for a satisfying break. You'll never view pilots quite the same after reading this book.

While the content of this book is somewhat interesting, I absolutely hated the author's tone. Lee is condescending and overly gruff. I can tell he is trying to be funny, but I found him to be irritating and maybe a bit...dense?

Ultimately, I think the book could have been much better if Lee had just let the stories speak for themselves instead of trying so hard to be "entertaining." In the end, I was disappointed with the stories--and even slightly bored.

The book is filled with interesting tales that have just enough truth to be believable but not so mired down in facts as to be boring.
five stars for pilots
four stars for those interesting in aviation
three stars for everyone else.
A couple of problems. About 1/3 of the way through the book some of the paragraphs are repeated and in one case something is missing. A few other typos (rode for road.) But overall intelligently written.
