In love with a yak, April 5, 2007
This review is from: There's a Yak in My Bed (Hardcover)
This is an ingenious cross-over between a picture book and an easy reader. In my opinion, THERE'S A YAK IN MY BED! is destined to be a star. Pluta deftly spins an open-ended story filled with silliness, odd-ball humor, non-sequitors, and a complete lack of didacticism. It's absolutely everything a picture book should be.
To sweeten the deal, Pluta employs easy reader vocabulary and word count, so the book can pass through the years with a child from being a favorite read-aloud to becoming one of the first books the child can read on his or her own. Terrific!
Stallop's illustrations are vivid and active. The text is incorporated into the pictures, which makes for a super-fun read. Every illustration heightens the humor and underscores Pluta's characterizations. Stallop was a perfect match for this story.
This is the first Blooming Tree book I've seen in person, and the quality is superlative. It's well worth the price, especially since it does double-duty as a picture book and an easy reader.
I hope Blooming Tree gets this book into the hands of every reviewer they can. This Yak is going to fly!
