Everyone seems to agree that this is perhaps the most comfortable option out there for a car camping sleeping pad. There are no alternatives out there that I have found that allow you to create a true queen sized but very portable and comfortable and insulated bed. Zero.

We have been using these for 5 years now and they certainly beat the overly-bouncy Aerobed air mattresses that we were using that always sucked away our body heat and usually lost too much air over time.

You can get much the same comfort by simply buying a tri-fold 4" mattress, however they are not much cheaper and a queen sized one is enormous.

You can also get similar comfort by just buying a cheap foam mattress. For one season, I tried these on top of a foam mattress for extra thickness, however that was a horrible idea as the foam kept absorbing all the humidity in the air and was always very damp when I needed to pack it up. I guess that is why you need these: Foam inside a water barrier sleeve.

I bought all four from Amazon at different times and I should point out that the 2 I purchased recently are different than the ones I purchased 5 years ago. Why four? I put one set one top of another for a very plush queen sized mattress. Put a standard queen sized heated mattress pad on top and you can easily sleep as well as at home.

The fleece topping on the Thermarest Dreamtime is very nice to the touch... even nicer than our 5 year old versions. The air-mattress allows me to get the bottom set (#1 and #2) very firm and the top (#3 and #4) set much less firm.

I love the Dreamtime. My application is for indoor use not camping.
I tried it both with and without inflation.
With either I did not bottom out and feel the floor and I am 6'1" tall and weigh 230 pounds.
I found that adding no extra inflation was the most comfortable. Adding extra air made it a bit too hard for my taste.
This is great because it is easy to prepare.
I roll it out flat as soon as possible and I open both air vents.
The foam inside expands and causes air to be sucked in which amounts to automatic inflation to my comfort preference without the need for a pump.
After auto inflation I just close both vents before using.
For me the length is great and the width is quite adequate.
A friend that has an eight inch thick high quality air mattress admits that by comparison the Dreamtime provides superior comfort and less effort to use.
I initially thought the price was high for the physical size of the Dreamtime but after using it I realized that size is not what I payed for.
I payed for comfort and ease of use and I definitely got a bargain.
Actually, the size and light weight is part of the bargain since it is easily carried and stored when it is rolled up.
I had no trouble getting it back into the carrying bag via rolling it up slowly and tightly and kneeling on it to squeeze out the air through the open vents. Once rolled close the vents and secure the compressed shape with the attached straps. Simple!!

Use it for camping (car). A little on the heavy side, but also WAY more comfy than others I have had in the past. Really all it is.. a normal air bed with some memory foam in a slip cover. I slept like a baby

Let's get this off the bat: This pad is extremely comfortable. It certainly provides what you would expect from a product advertised with 3.5 inches thickness. It unrolls easily, though for fastest use you may have to inflate manually. The memory foam, by its nature, does not spring back quickly.

It is also extremely bulky. When packed, it measures about 12 inches think by 25 inches across. It's heavy too. It's advertised for "base camp" use and designed accordingly. I used it to sleep in the back of a minivan. You will need space at home, too; the documentation says to store it opened flat.

The worst thing about this pad, however, is the quality. The first time I tried to put it back in its bag, one of the buckles ripped right off, and the sack itself tore in several places. I am not usually strong and did not apply an unusually large amount of force; the product is just not that well assembled. The second I tried to put it in its (now mutilated bag), I had greater success; I think the key is to sit on it for a while to let the memory foam compress before trying to insert it into the bag.

The mattress does come with a lifetime warranty, which I have not attempted to use.

I purchased this mainly to use at work since I work a split shift and have 2.5 hours of downtime to rest. I figured on the days I'm really tired, I could at least nap. And the bonus would be the ability to use it when I go camping as well. Since my friends raved about Thermarest, I knew I couldn't go wrong buying one.

I admit: I've never used another Thermarest product before. My only comparison is a regular air mattress. And let me say: it is a huge leap above an air mattress. I can definitely see why my friends are loyal Thermarest customers.

Having used this for the past two months, I have to say I'm pretty impressed. The quality is great (feels solidly built), is warm (but not hot) and most importantly: it is very comfortable when the firmness is adjusted to your liking. The layer of memory foam on top is definitely added comfort, but being portable, don't expect it to be a memory foam mattress like you'd have at home. I don't think anything is ever going to compare and be as portable and light. But laying on it is actually pleasant; I can sleep well without feeling the cold tile floor or just air unevenly supporting me.

Is this a step above an air mattress? Most definitely a huge step. Do I have any complaints? If I had to complain, it would be about the price and some would argue, portability. In my opinion, however, the price is justified by the company's excellent reputation and excellent quality they put into their products. As for portability: this isn't made to go on backpacking trips. For car camping or to have a spare air mattress for one at your house (or job), I don't think you can go wrong buying this if you have the money to spend.
