INTRO

Not knowing my objectives when I deployed to Haiti, I purchased this mat for both sleeping outdoors or comverting it into a camping chair. The construction is lightweight and fits easily into my Tactical Backpack. The negative is that I had to purchase a sac for it separately.

USE

This pad is comfortable, as a stand alone pad or useful when trying to sleep on a military mattress. Open the seal, and the pad inflates in a matter of seconds. Taking this pad down takes about 3-5 minutes to roll, empty the air and then fold again. The outer covering is durable.

PRO

Light
Versatile and compact

CON

No accompanying sack

OVERALL

This is a great accessory sleeping pad for both camping, military operations or even when watching a game (with the chair accessory).

5.0 out of 5 stars Therm-a-Rest to the Test, November 11, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Therm-a-Rest Men's ProLite Plus Mattress (Misc.)
I will be field testing this mattress in a week and will update my review thereafter. Initial impressions are that it is a decently lightweight and small mattress when rolled up. Very nice for lightweight and space saving backpackers like myself. After rolling it out it is plenty long enough(the reg size) and not too wide but will do the job just fine. It won't inflate completely by itself so I blew it up almost to its max and found it to be VERY comfortable and supportive. I am quite impressed with this mattress, it seems like it will be very comfortable.

Only con I can think of is the price and that it doesn't come with the stuff sack. Other than that, it gets a 5/5 for doing EXACTLY what it is meant to do, and doing it very well. You get what you pay for and this lightweight comfortable and compact mattress isn't lacking.

UPDATE:
After 3 day backpacking trip in November in W.V. this sleeping pad worked perfectly. No complaints. Insulated from the icy ground well. Very comfortable. Very light. Very pleased!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Nights Sleep, May 17, 2010

This review is from: Therm-a-Rest Men's ProLite Plus Mattress (Misc.)
Excellent mattress for backpacking. I have always slept on the ground because I just didn't think a matt like this was worth the money or valuable space it would take up in my pack, boy was I wrong. I have never slept through the night while camping untill now. You wouldn't believe the difference that a 1 1/2 inch foam matt can make. It earns the space it takes up in my pack. I do think it was worth the $100.00 I spent on it, but I think that the storage bag should come with it. I had to pay an extra $20.00 to get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Light And Comfy For Backpacking, April 23, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is one of the best pads for backpacking. Nice and light weight, and thick enough that you never touch the ground. Only downside to all of the self inflating pads is the foam is somewhat a memory foam, so for best results it needs to be stored fully inflated and the rolled up time has to be minimal. Ive blown this pad up many times and its not very hard if your lazy like me and dont want to store it inflated. Well recommended for backpackers, and ive started using mine for all my car camping now too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pro-lite, March 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Purchased the Pro-lite after trying out several different sleeping pads at Bass Pro Shops. When I noticed the Pro-lite was considerably lighter and folded smaller than the others I was sold. I have used it three times now on scout campouts, and have been very pleased with its comfort and ease of folding. I am dissapointed that a case is not included with this one. Weight is heavier than an inflatable, but for a self-inflating, this is on the lower end. The insulation worked well last weekend when the temps got down into the 30's, I felt no coolness from below.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Mattress for a Great Night of Sleep, March 4, 2011
This review is from: Therm-a-Rest Men's ProLite Plus Mattress (Misc.)
The Therm-a-Rest ProLite Plus is a lightweight, compact, comfortable and highly effective mattress to insulate you from the ground especially in cold weather. If you have been backpacking and hit the trail for a long hike your body will appreciate a comfortable nights rest on this mattress. The importance of a good nights sleep cannot be underestimated and this mattress will make that possible.

On the flip side the mattress does not come with a stuff sack and can be difficult to fold compact enough to fit into the Therm-a-Rest ProLite Plus Stuff Sack. This is especially true if your hands are cold or injured. Of course any air mattress has the potential to get a hole and leak air so it would be wise to have a patch kit for such a situation. Despite all this the Therm-a-Rest ProLite Plus is a 5 star mattress that I would not be without on any of my trips.

I like to use two pads by using a Thermarest Ridge Rest Solar Sleeping Pad in conjunction with a Therm-a-Rest ProLite Plus Mattress for a double layer of warmth and comfort especially when doing cold weather camping. While the air mattress can get a hole and deflate the Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest Solar Sleeping Pad will not have such issues and is a dependable pad if something should happen to the air mattress.

I recommend the Therm-a-Rest ProLite Plus Mattress as it is very comfortable and packs very small. After a hard day on the trail your body will thank you for a great nights rest.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a Big Guy !, December 9, 2011
This review is from: Therm-a-Rest Men's ProLite Plus Mattress (Misc.)
I'm 5'11 300lbs and this pad works great! I have back problems so I do tend to sleep on my side. I was shocked and amazed how much more comfortable this pad is versus an air mattress! I woke up with no back pain or soreness. I believe it will be worth every penny I spent on it as long as it lasts me 5 years. I was disappointed in how much a pain it is to roll it back up into a stuff sack. My recommendation is to get a cheaper bigger stuff sack. I found it absurd that the $40 pads come with a stuff sack but the $80 pad did not. I had tried the $40 green trail-rite pad before this one and the difference is very noticeable.

4 stars only due to me having to spend an extra $15 on a stuff sack. Don't hesitate this is an awesome pad.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works well, September 29, 2011

The first time you unpack this, it will not self-inflate; you'll need to put your lungs to use and inflate it yourself. The instructions explain that you need to do this the first time and then store the pad in the inflated condition (under a bed or behind a couch) to help the pad hold its inflated shape. If you do this, you can deflate the pad when packing it before an outing, and it will (pretty much) inflate on its own when you take it out of it's stuff sack to use it.

The pad won't make you think you're sleeping on an expensive air mattress, but for a portable backpacking pad, it's fairly comfortable compared to the basic foam pad I used before this.

Be advised this pad currently does not include a stuff sack. According to a salesman I spoke to at a store in Seattle, Therm-a-Rest will start including a stuff sack next year. But at the time of this review, you'll need to buy one separately, which will add around $15 to the cost if you go with the one Therm-a-Rest offers.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very nice mattress pad, September 9, 2011
This review is from: Therm-a-Rest Men's ProLite Plus Mattress (Misc.)
I got two of these for a recent backpacking trip. I was rather impressed with them. They were soft enough to keep my hip bones from hurting when I laid on my side. The only complaint I guess I would have is that they don't roll down very compactly. I think they roll well enough to make them OK for backpacking, but only if you have a decent sized pack. Otherwise, I would go for the regular Prolite and sacrifice a little bit of comfort. By the way, if you buy one, don't buy the stuff sack. The "Outdoor Recreation Group - Set of 3 Ultimate Dry Sacks" has a sack that fits them perfectly. It's cheaper and you get two other sacks with it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Light & Comfortable, June 27, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I'm getting older and sleeping on the ground just doesn't work anymore. Air mattresses are too heavy & bulky to carry far. I gave this Therm-A-Rest Pro Lite a shot based on the reviews, and got the best night sleep under the stars that I've had in a long time. This is very comfortable, especially for the thickness.

Others had mentioned that it took several hours to self inflate on first use. I didn't wait, and gave it a few puffs of the lungs. It was filled and ready to go to work in just a few minutes.

It is true that you need to roll it back up tight to get it to fit into the sleeve, but it is small enough to add to the backpack, and comfortable enough to be willing to carry it hiking and camping.

Four stars only because the sleeve should be included with the already pricey mattress.
