I just use it on my porch so I can sit out there in the evenings without being attacked by bugs and mosquitoes.

The manufacturer should remove this bit of false advertising from the product description at once.

I think that like applied repellants, what works for some types of mosquitoes will not work for other types. Unlike the reviewer above, we had better luck with this lantern than the Off brand. The Thermacell brand uses Allethrin, which is not toxic to mammals, but will bother any near by fish. We have both water and woods in our development and have constant bitting from 4:30 pm onwards. We bought two of these and put them out on our deck for a party. People were out on the deck from 4 - 11 pm, and only a few bites in the middle when the pad ran out. I gave it 4 stars, only because of the expense of the refills.

I have never written a review before but as I sit here on my patio with my ThermaCELL Patio Lantern I felt compelled to sing its praises. IT REALLY WORKS. My daughter and husband are mosquito magnets and we recently moved to the Northern Virginia area after living in generally bug free conditions. After much research online, desperation, and all the positive reviews I decided to give the lantern a try. It is totally worth the cost of refills. It repels most flying insects including mosquitoes within the 15 foot area as stated on the box and I have even used it in the middle of the day to keep away regular flying pests. You need to give it 10-15 minutes to warm up before sitting out as my daughter and husband can attest. Within 10-15 minutes of turning it off, the bugs start moving in again so make sure you buy a set of refills at the same time as you buy the lantern, you won't want to run out! (Home Depot sells refills so they are not hard to find if you run out and can't wait for Amazon) My first mat and butane cartridge lasted the same amount of time. I was not keeping track but had at least 6-8 hours of use - I may have left the butane cartridge on by mistake at some point. The mats are supposed to last only 4 hours and the butane cartridges for 12 hours. It was a simple procedure to change the cartridge and mat and the instructions are easy to understand. The light is a separate feature and the repellent can be used with the light on or off. The lantern is plastic and looks it and the light is not bright, more like mood lighting (powered by 4 AA batteries that come with it) but who cares as long as it works. It has allowed us to eat dinner outside and enjoy the nice weather and does exactly what it says so it deserves its 5 stars.

We're very skeptical of these type of products, but bought one anyway last year to try an enjoy a deck we had newly painted deck without showering ourselves in bug spray. Since then, we've used this on our deck, on camping trips, and just yesterday at an outdoor party. You can tell how well it works as soon as you turn it off - all the bugs come back. We've had great luck with our lantern and will be ordering another refill package for this summer.

I'm not sure why it didn't work for a previous reviewer. A few thoughts -
a)The blue pads need to be warm to release their scent and provide protection. Start the lantern 5-10 minutes early and make sure the flame is on using the "peephole" provided near the top of the lid. (There are no open flames or matches needed, however, there is a small butane cartridge that makes a tiny enclosed flame to warm the pads. If the flame is not on, you won't repel bugs.)
b)The "protected" area is not huge, so don't expect to be bug free in a giant yard with just one. On lantern covers about the size of a large picnic table. If you need more coverage, you'll need more lanterns.
c)Definitely order the refill package. A pad lasts reasonably long but it's totally unfun to run out of pads or butane.

After my recent move to Louisiana I found out that the mosquitoes are the size of pterodactyls and unfortunately for me the mosquitoes like me more than I like double stuffed Oreo cookies. I like to set out on the deck at night and read a book or surf Reddit on my Ipad which was near impossible with the amount of mosquitoes that search me out from many miles away. I found that Repel Sportsmen Max Formula 4 oz Insect Repellent Lotion 40% DEET HG-94079 worked good but I was left feeling stinky and would need to shower immediately after I came back in from outside. A family member who has lived in Louisiana for many years suggested that I try ThermaCELL so I got the ThermaCELL MR-9W Cordless Mosquito Repellent Patio Lantern and was amazed with the results. Now I can sit out all night and not have to worry about getting taken away by the giant mosquitoes. I also found that if I wear my The Mountain Three Wolf Moon Short Sleeve Tee while sitting outside with my ThermaCell amazing things can happen. I have not had a single mosquito bite since I started using my ThermaCell, I absolutely love it.

We bought this for our patio and we live less than a mile of a lake so we have a major mosquitoe problem. We've been using for about 2 months and have been very happy with the results. We just purchased a 2nd one for my parents, they live on the lake.

In the area I live, they've stopped spraying for mosquitoes because the county government is too cheap to do it anymore, and the resulting population has put a huge damper on any outdoor activities here. Now, I've seen places with much worse mosquito problems, but just as a rough guess, I think I get bitten about ten times an hour here if I don't wear repellent. And I don't react very well to DEET; I can use it, but I typically don't feel very good after doing so. Between these two things, I'd all but lost the use of my deck.

Then I bought one of these, and I haven't been bitten yet. As long as the air is reasonably still, this thing is like a small glass dome over your head. Each lantern seems to cover about enough space for two people, about five feet in every direction. This isn't a huge area, but there will be no mosquitoes there. When I've first started it up, before much of the chemical has diffused into the air, I've seen mosquitoes come sniffing around, and then almost bounce off; if I'm not yet in the protected zone, pulling the lantern nearby drives them off almost instantly. It's really quite remarkable.

Note that this chemical is highly poisonous to fish, and that it may not be all that wonderful for people either, but if you hate mosquito bites, I've never seen anything that works like this thing works. I've never had much luck with the coils, and citronella candles are fairly laughable, but I do not get bitten when this thing is on.

Cost, however, is a definite downside. Each lantern covers only a small area, so if you wanted to protect a large deck, you might need four or even eight, and the consumable cost on these things is about fifty cents an hour.
