Nice sturdy cord with metal coil cover.

Much easier to just fill it and forget it than trying to keep thawed water out for the dogs all the time, plus saves me a trip outside in the cold!

My chicken waterer freezes up every day in the winter, this bowl is the perfect solution.

K&H 1.5 gal. Thermal Bowl, assorted colors
I provide some food, shelter and water for stray animals during the
cold winter months. I used to have to break the ice out of the water
dish several times a day and hope that my little friends came before
it froze over. This thermal bowl is exactly what I needed! We've had
temperatures in the single digits, and the bowl keeps the water liquid
without a sign of ice. I have recommended it to friends who have
outdoor pets.

I purchased this bowl for a feral cat colony (housed in a garage transformed into a strawbale "barn" for the kitties) and needed something that was sturdy enough to not be tipped over by a few of the cats who like to drink with their paws on the sides of the water bowl.

Living in Minnesota, a water bowl that would keep water from freezing is essential. In these parts the season known as "Fall" lasts approximately 12 hrs. The timeframe it goes from 78 to a daytime high of 38 the next day, with overnight lows in the 20's and 30's.

We've already had overnight lows (with windchill) in the low 20's and teens so I've had a chance to see how well the bowl would handle a dozen kitties as well as the cold temps.

Works like a charm. One day the water was frozen, I plugged in the bowl and no more frozen water the next day, and the weeks following.

If you have outdoor pets and cold overnight lows, this water bowl is what you need. Didn't seem to up my electric bill either which is nice.

Yes, I would recommend this item. Also, it took 1 week from time of ordering to arrive. I think they shipped the day after the order was processed, the only reason it took that long to arrive, was due to a weekend that fell a few days after I ordered.

I purchased this bowl as I have two dogs that stay outdoors. As the winters in Nebraska can get cold, I figured this would be the best option instead of refilling their water bowl twice an hour. I tested it out in the upper twenty degree temperatures along with another bowl of water (that froze) and was satisfied with the outcome of the water in this heated bowl. The bowl itself does not get hot, but warm enough to keep the water from freezing. The cable also has a metal "spring" surrounding it as an anti-chew device. As I see it being a deterrent, I would say that if your dog is a chewer, you might want to cover it with something else (like PVC pipe) and secure it well. I give this product 5 stars!

P.S. Before people start critizing that my dogs are outside, they have a heated doghouse. Thanks!

I've tried one other bowl. It did not keep water from freezing when air temps fell below about 10 degrees. This bowl has performed much better. We've had several nights with temps below zero and have not had a problem yet.

12/08: I take care of a feral cat colony here on Long Island. The winters can get pretty cold and I was concerned about constantly finding the cat's water dish frozen over. This heated bowl has really saved the day. I just plugged it in(we have an outside outlet)and since then the cats have had water whenever it suits them.
I would definitely recommend this dish for anyone who has outside animals who need access to fresh water regardless of the weather.

12/10: It's now 2 years later and my heated bowl no longer heats. In all fairness there is only a limited one-year warranty but I was still hoping that it would go longer than two years. Because of that I am deducting a star.

We use our heated bowl in the henhouse where we have a small flock of two dozen laying hens. It's so much easier to carry a plastic milk-gallon of water to them every morning instead of chipping ice from their bowl, or using a 5 gallon poultry waterer with a heated coil. We live in Maine, where so far this winter the temperature has been hovering near zero. The water is always thawed. It's wonderful.

I bought this for my bird *collection* outdoors. They LOVE it! Unfortunately, the squirrels do, too. But I can live with that. I purchased it in the summer, when it was very inexpensive and the shipping was free from Amazon.
An added bonus is that the bowl is large, so it scares away burglars, who think I have a really big dog!

I am updating this review in light of another reviewer's solution to this problem. I am going to leave the rating at three stars, though, because the solution adds about 60% to the price of this bowl. The manufacturer really should have included it, even if it meant raising the price, since most who would bother to buy a bowl like this would also want to keep it clean.

The solution is to do as I suggested in my original review (below) and insert a properly-sized stainless steel bowl inside this one, but what the other reviewer got that I missed is that you need to put enough water in THIS bowl to conduct heat to the stainless steel bowl you use as a liner. I proved last night that that solution works great down at least to 7°F, with no ice at all.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

This poor design forces you to choose between clean water and unfrozen water. That dilemma could have been avoided by providing a removable insert to hold the water, or making the heater more powerful, or making the power cord detachable. (Unplugging it from the outlet is not an option when the outlet is practically inaccessible to protect it from the weather.)

I suspected this bowl would be impossible to keep clean, so I did what the designers of this bowl should have done and also bought a stainless steel bowl that fits perfectly inside it, thinking that I could remove the inner bowl easily for cleaning while still keeping the water from freezing. WRONG! The feeble heater cannot heat the steel bowl enough to prevent freezing even in the mid 20s, and it will get a lot colder before the winter is over.
