5.0 out of 5 stars The reviews are right on, these curtains work., August 1, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Just as the other reviewers sate, these blackout/thermal curtains work exceptionally well (and thank you very much for taking the time to write the reviews, they really helped me make up my mind). But truthfully, I wasn't expecting much of a change.

I got them yesterday, put them up and then went to work. When I got home last night my bedroom was at least 10 degrees cooler than normal; and with the lights out, much darker as well. I recently moved from a house where my lady worked nights and had the bedroom basically blacked out so she could sleep during the day. My problem is where I live now the morning sun comes streaming in my window very early and very bright, thus waking me up earlier than I like (I work second shift and usually sleep until 10 AM, so being awakened at 8-9 AM was killing me). That is no longer a problem, thank God. I even overslept 1.5 hours this morning!!

And right now we are in the middle of a heat wave with triple digit temperatures, so I can vouch for the validity of the thermal properties of these excellent curtains. My room is usually at least 10 degrees warmer than the rest of the house even with my ceiling fan on, but now that is no longer a problem. The same is true in winter, my room stays at least 10 degrees colder (I've lived here before...thank God for understanding, loving parents!). I'm sure I'll see the same results this winter, with my room being much warmer.

Also, these are very soft, satiny feeling curtains, not rough feeling at all. If you didn't know better you'd think they were much higher priced regular fine draperies with no thermal/blackout properties whatsoever. But touch can be very deceiving in this case. This company deserves an award for the design of these curtains.

Thank you very much for a product that actually lives up to what you say they will do; and again, thank you to the other reviewers. If you were in my situation, and want to save money as well, you really need to try these out. Leonard B.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not complete blackout, August 22, 2009
I purchased these curtains based on the majority of positive reviews, and because I found the negative reviews to be a bit overly critical and therefore questionable.

Having said that, there is truth to both sides. Yes, they do a fair job of blocking out the light, but I would definitely not say that they block them out anywhere close to 100% or the advertised 99%. I live in an apartment with south-face windows, which means I basically get sunlight throughout all day light hours. I notice that it appears to be 99$ blackout early in the day. However, as the day progresses, more and more light penetrates the curtains, until I can clearly see the silhouette of the window frame through the curtain and the window panes. Having said that, there is no problem at night with blocking out street lights.

I think it comes down to expectations and needs. If you truly need 100% light blockage during the brightest times of day, you will either need to supplement these curtains with another layer, or buy something more "industrial strength". However, I manage to sleep through the midday despite the less-than-perfect blackout provided when the sun is at its peak, so it isn't so much a problem for myself.

The only setup that has ever provided me with perfect blackout (and was constructed in a stepwise, not a rational, planned out fashion) was one set of blinds, covered with a plastic blind, and then a huge, black thick canvas sheet that extended almost half a foot on either side of said window. It was a bit extreme (and very cumbersome to get to opening the windows), but it worked. I was hoping to avoid such a hack job this time around by getting "blackout" curtains, but unfortunately, they do not approach the effectiveness of what I had previously cobbled together.

Kagome USA "Kagome USA" (The Crossroads of America) - See all my reviews

I have these curtains in "Sky Blue" and in "Navy Blue" for my daughter's and my son's rooms, respectively. The navy curtains are complete black-out curtains - they let no light in through the curtains themselves (there is some slight light from the tops and the bottoms where the curtains do not meet the wall - I would think this is to be expected). I was so thrilled with them that I bought the lighter blue curtains for my daughter's room. The Sky Blue curtains are NOT complete black-out curtains. They are heavy-duty and they do block more light than other brands of non-black-out curtains that I have in other rooms, but they do allow some back-lighting shining through, which is disappointing.

However, they do seem to work very well to keep temperatures in the room down. I suspect that the darker colors work much better than the light colors at preventing light, but all both colors do a nice job as thermal curtains. I like the material, and the colors are well-represented on this page. Overall, I am pleased, but people should be aware that they will need to purchase dark colors in order to get black-out curtains.
