Product Description

2.5" Solid State Drives (SSDs) or Hard Disk Drives offer many benefits over the larger 3.5" hard disk drives such as lower heat output, faster speed (with SSD), and lower power consumption. But installing a new 2.5" SSD or HDD into an existing computer may not be possible due to lack of 2.5" bay drive support. Thermaltake 3.5" to 2.5" Bay Drive Converter Kit easily transforms any available 3.5" bay drive to accommodate up to two 2.5" hard disk drives or SSDs. The Converter Kit is designed to work with all types of computer cases (both screw-on type or tool-less type, and can be installed within a minute. Constructed from robust SECC steel to ensure strength and integrity of the adapter.

Pros are that it works and is cheap. Only paid $6.99 each. No fitment issues with OCZ SSD and Coolermaster case's 3.5" slide-in drive trays. Supports two 2.5" drives which is great, though for heat producing magnetic drives you may want opt to put them in separate adapters. It would work perfectly fine for SSDs that produce little heat.

On the negative side, the horizontal bar of the adapter gets in the way of using a 90 degree SATA connector, so you will have to use a cable with a straight SATA connector on the end going into your drive. I prefer a 90 degree end on my hard drives SATA cables due to how my case is arranged. Note that you would not be able to use a 90 degree end on the top drive if you put two drives in the adapter.

I purchased two and they both had mediocre or poor paint jobs. The black paint had obviously run before it dried pretty bad on one, though the second one was slightly better. Not that it affects performance or fit sine the paint is very thin, nor will really very be visible once installed--it was just disappointing from Thermaltake. The boxes they came in had better finish on them.

This is a stamped and bend piece and the material is very thin. While you will probably be ok, I would be somewhat concerned about stripping the screw holes. I am using tool-less drive trays, however.

I also own a Silverstone adapter which I like a bit better as the mounts are offset to allow the 90 degree SATA connector and the more simple silver finish is of better quality looks nicer in the end. It is also a considerably heavier gauge material so I would assume there is less risk of stripping the screw holes. While this Thermaltake piece works just fine, I'd probably opt for the Silverstone again (currently only $1 more at $7.99) if purchasing another one.

Holds 2x2.5 drives fine. But the threaded holes to mount it in a 3.5 bay, are not the same as the holes in a 3.5 drive. My Antec drive bay has silocone rubber bushings to isolate vibrations from each drive and long bolts with big pan heads that go thru the rubber. Those screws don't thread into this adapter so it doesn't work in the cage. did work ok in a single external 3.5 bay where I could use the shortscrews that came with it.

This is a simple product, and it has all the holes you could possible need to mount a drive. Except for the ones on the bottom. If your case holds drives by the screw holes on the bottom of the drive, this is going to leave you out of luck.

Bought this specifically because it was what other people bought when purchasing the Samsung Electronics 840 Pro. It fit the drive like a glove and the included screws fit the holes on my 3.5 hard drive slots.

I don't know what else you really want out of a converter kit other than maybe a built in fan or lights.

Pros:
Simple
Sturdy
Relatively cheap

Cons:
none

none

This product does allow for one or two 2.5 inch drives to be mounted into a 3.5 inch drive form factor. However, it does not align the data and power connectors of a single 2.5 inch drive to the same place that a 3.5 inch drive has them. I could not use it to mount a 2.5 inch drive to my Mac Pro 3.5 inch bay which has a direct plugin to the backplane. It should work fine for boxes that use a cable to connect the drives. I ended up making a small flat plate with a few holes and slightly modifying my Mac Pro drive carrier bracket (elongated one hole) to solve the problem. The Thermaltake went back into the box and on the shelf.

I don't understand the negative reviews for this. This is great! It has wonderful airflow, mine came with a perfect finish, and great attention to detail like the rolled edges on the front and back for strength.

Another reviewer complained that it was stamped metal. What else would it be made out of? Plastic would be too flimsy and forged would be too expensive and wouldn't cool as well.

Yet another complained about the finish. First of all, mine was perfect, but if it isn't- so what? It's just an adapter. Nobody cares what the inside of your computer looks like.

Oh, and I guess you can't use a 90 degree SATA cable with this. BFD.

This works pretty well in a HAF 912 case, although the tool-less sides you have to pop out the toolless pegs and use screws instead since the pegs are too big for the holes. But the holes and everything alight nicely. Love being able to just slide in the drive

I ordered this to go along with a hybrid hdd in order to replace a defective hdd in my '08 iMac. I have no complaints with this part, but I could not use this and returned it because the data and power cables would not reach the hdd. The bracket holds the hard drive in a centered position whereas the factory 3.5" is to the side. There is no give to these cables so I opted to go the simple route and purchased a 3.5" replacement drive instead.
