Unfortunately it turned out that it was indeed the PSU that was faulty.
Stefan
It works as described, was easy to read and with it's assistance I was able to fix my desktop.
J. DeCrane
Didn't do the job this time possible because it was a failing PSU not a dead one.
Michael

I recently purchased this item to figure out why my PC would not power up anymore. The PSU (also a Thermaltake) passed the test and i went ahead and replaced the motherboard. Unfortunately it turned out that it was indeed the PSU that was faulty.

Thermaltake customer support gave me this information:

Thank you for contacting Thermaltake Customer Service. It's possible that the +5V is not outputting the correct amount of voltage when connected to the motherboard. The power supply tester can only put a tiny load of the power supply in order to monitor the readings, but power supplies need to be loaded with power draw in order to accurately output power. This explains why the unit shows up fine with the tester but not with the motherboard. The PSU will most likely need to be replaced.

This may be a situation where most PSU testers would fail, however that means the product was a waste of money for me. (tester + mobo replacement).

1 Star minimum + 1 Star for support.

If you want a simple volt tester, this is the deal. This device does NOT "TEST" a power supply. I held off review until the fifth PS passed using this device, but after using actual loads (current draw) the power supplies were in fact incapable of supplying the required current under load. 20+ dollars to tell me the same thing my Fluke DVM could tell me. Not Impressed at all. I recovered my investment on this device by adding a second harness including some high wattage resistors that actually produce a load. Another 12 dollars in parts, and a couple hours of time but it now is a TRUE PS tester. Non techs beware.this device will indicate a bad PS is good. You have to test them with current load.

We use this in my tech class to test the power supplies. It is simple to use, just plug the 20/24 plug into it and it will tell you if it is good or not. Either it lights up or it doesn't. It is very light, and feels like cheap plastic, but it works well, and have had no problems using it. This is a cheap way to diagnosis bad power supplies. It's a must have.

I'm glad I ordered this tester when I bought the computer. Tester showed my power supply was dead so had to get a new power supply.

I needed to trouble shoot some computer problems I was having, so I purchased this product. It works as described, was easy to read and with it's assistance I was able to fix my desktop. Unfortunately, I doubt I will ever use this product again, so if you are looking for one of these, don't hesitate to take this one off my hands.

Operation is straight forward quick, and easy. Plug in each connection and the lights either light (good) or don't light (no good).

This POS tells me my broken PSU is working (when it makes the beeping sound). I will need to take it back to Frys. What a waste of time.
