5.0 out of 5 stars I believe these may be addictive
My cat is a "sauna cat." In the middle of summer, she would sleep on the overheating stereo receiver, or block the X360's exhaust vents. This winter, these are no longer available, and she's constantly pestering me for a lap. Which is nice, and makes me feel loved, but I know what she really wants. So I ordered this mat.

As soon as the mat arrived, I plugged it...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not very well made
The actual heating pad element is very small and does not warm the covering very much. This company used to make a much larger heating pad but I don't see it for sale anymore.

As soon as the mat arrived, I plugged it in, confirmed that it making heat, and set the cat on it. The cat did not move for two days. She barely gets up to eat. I'm sleeping alone, and my lap is always empty. Unconditional love? Hah!

It does not appear to generate heat until you press the foam cushioning. If you're a cat, you can accomplish this easily by walking or lying on it. :) I believe it acts as an insulator otherwise. This should reduce waste heat when the cat is not on it, but some cats may not be impressed, what with their short attention spans and all. Once you're pressing on it, it generates what I would describe as the "perfect level" of warmth. (My cat would probably want it scalding hot, but I couldn't stand the smell of burning hair, so it's for the best.)

The heater insert is less than 6" wide, so it does not get warm all the way across its 12.5" width. It does get warm from end to end down the middle. The product would be improved if the entire pad got warm. I could probably fit two warming strips side by side and heat the entire surface of the pad... is fire safety an issue here?

Heater insert width notwithstanding, my cat says I should give it 5 stars, so I have.

Updated Update: it's two years later (bought around Christmas of 2009, reviewed in Jan 2010, it's now Dec 2011). My kitty spent the entire two years on this heating pad, so I think it still gets 5 stars. My kitty "passed on" over the break :( but before that she had time to compare versus the "K&H Pet Bed Warmer" (13w 11x24) and "Petmate Indoor Pet Heating Pad Element" (30w 10x20). She preferred the larger K&H because she could sprawl out more, but the Petmate was too hot. Note that she was anemic at the end, so it is interesting that she did not like the warmer pad.

I have recently adopted a new, younger test subject...er I mean kitty, who is currently evaluating the K&H 11x24 pad.

I read all the reviews for these mats and was concerned about the heating pad size. DON'T BE!! The heating pad runs almost the length of the mat and centers well in the middle. The fleece side of the mat is certainly my cat's favorite side. It heats well and is already well loved. They must have upgraded the product, because the heating pad itself is now the perfect size for the cover.

....this works great! - Kitty litty loves it. Wife was a bit put out as the cats heating pad cost more that the one I got for her bad back. Well the cat does not nag or moan! Aside from this if you have a cat and its cold Kitty will purr all day on this thing and the cat will stay on this rather than a) Your couch b)Your bed c)your hair. Excellent product and delivered Amazon fast! A+

After a day of ignoring it and refusing to acknowledge its existence by my cats, there is a fight over who gets to sleep on the mat. I have a 14-year-old cat that is arthritic and she has deemed it hers; it nice for her to have a heated area to go to now that the weather is getting cooler. It has eliminated her rough jerky movements that usually occur on cooler mornings. The mat keeps her toasty and fluid. It looks like I will be purchasing another since it is a hit!

This item is working well, has a nice soft warmth. My old cat loves the heat.
Then, she wouldn't go into it after a few days. Discovered she really hated the
smell it emits still, & the smell lingers on her body,so put a fleece topper on it, now she is using it again. Hope the smell goes away as it ages. It is a new "warm-plastic" smell, is only how I can discribe it. i just grateful it's still working.

3.0 out of 5 stars Does not operate as described, November 21, 2009

I bought this bed/mat for my cat in the middle of October and she immediately began using it as her favorite sleeping spot. As described, the surface of the mat remained wamer than the ambient room temperature, and that's what seemed to attract her. After she got onto the mat, it would warm up to create an even cozier napping spot. After using it for about one month, I noticed the mat no longer felt warm to the touch, although it did warm up when I pressed on it. My cat is no longer attracted to the mat; probably because it doesn't feel warm until she's been on it awhile, very much like any other available surface! When I wrote to the company to complain, they asked me to test it by putting a pillow on it for a few minutes and then checking to see if it felt warm. Well, yeah, it DID feel warm after having something placed on top of it, but what happened to the "warmer than ambient air temperature" part? I am keeping it because the company will only issue a refund or replacement if they deem it defective. I'm not willing to spend the money to ship it there and take my chances on them deciding it's defective. I have a feeling this is more a situation where it might be working as it was designed to work and the information provided with it is incorrect. When it seemed to be warmer than ambient air temperature, the air temperature was warmer than it is nowadays.

Don't you love products that ended up being used as promised. I do.

Our cat has fallen in love with the mat and has given up sleeping on the A/V receiver. No problem putting it on top of a chair: it barely feels warm to the touch.

Imagine this: We take in an older, abandoned housecat cat in November, and then decide her shedding is too much. We live in the midwest, bu we gave her the boot anyway. She cried all night to come inside until I researched, then purchased this product for her. I put an (upside-down) cardboard box over the top of it (cut a small entry door), sat it in the garage, and the rest is history. She got inside her new home within seconds the day I placed it for her, and NEVER begged to come inside our house again. I should mention that I tested the temps on this product, and just as advertised, you can feel a very small amount of heat radiating from the mat without touching it. When you apply a small bit of pressure, you can feel the warmth increase. Cat loves it, we're happy too.

3.0 out of 5 stars K&H Thermo-Kitty Mat, December 10, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The actual heat source covers only about half of the mat. It slides around inside when you move the mat around, so you have to unzip it to adjust and center it. The mat itself is a good size and the color is nice (mocha), just wish the heating source covered the entire mat. My little 3.5 lb. Yorkie doesn't seem to care for it too much. She won't go lay on it on her own. I have to put her on it and half the time, she would simply just walk off of it without laying down on it. Sometimes she would stay after I put her on it, but lay on it halfway on the heat source. I don't think she likes the texture of the mat. She likes to lay on baby blankets, so when I put a baby blanket over the mat, the heat doesn't seem to be able to penetrate the blanket, since she likes to crumple up the blanket before she lay down on it. That just totally defeats the purpose of the heating pad.
