Well, we are farmers and have turned to thermos for years for hot beverages to keep our food hot in the field. This year, we decided it was time to upgrade our line of thermoses. Not knowing what to get, we bought two of each Sipp-line Thermos food jars (teal and plum) and four Thermos King jars for a total of 8. All performed the same. The Sipps vacuum seal shut which keeps the food very warm but sometimes hard to open. We have keep everything in these jars from eggs to casserole/hotdishes to soup. It really does keep food hot for the 7 hours as promised. We found if we fill the thermos with hot water first to warm the lining, and then fill with the food, it kept it warmer longer than the promised 7 hours. All in all, we love both lines and would highly recommend it to hard workers out there who want a warm meal while away from the house.

UPDATE: 11/21/14:

It's not been almost 2 years since we've purchased these and they still perform amazingly well. We 100% stand by the trick of putting hot water in the thermoses first to heat the walls while we finish cooking. My dad hates this trick because when he opens up his thermos a few hours later, he has to take time to allow his food to cool down (parents - something to think about if packing lunches for kids). I do notice that we tend to gravitate to grabbing the "King" line over the "Sipp" when we pack our food. I'm not sure why that is ... it could be because we have darker colors for the King line and in our mind that would "wear" better (aka not scuff) while being thrown around all day. Second reason is probably because it is easier to open than the Sipp (creates a vacuum sometimes). I'm really not sure why we favor one over the other - never really thought about it.

This thing is AWESOME!!!!! I use my Food Jar all the time and it keeps things extremely hot for hours. Very early in the morning (4:30 or 5:00 am) I heat water in my tea kettle and pour it into the Food Jar while I am preparing my lunch. Dump the water, add the heated food, and my lunch is too hot to eat @ 1:00 or 1:30pm. I can't imagine living without this product. I like it so much, I have bought one for everyone in my household. You won't regret this purchase!

The Thermos Sipp style keeps food hot much better than the Thermos Nissan style. I did a side-by-side test by pouring boiling water into each (after pre-warming as the directions say) and letting them sit in my warm kitchen for 3 hours. After 3 hours, the Nissan bottle temp was down in the unsafe range (below 140 degrees). The Sipp was 162 degrees. Tested another Sipp and got same results. Took the Nissan style back to the StuffMart.

I thought this addressed the design problem of their other food jars that had a plastic bottom that came off. It kept food warm a little longer than their other models, but the plastic part underneath the cap broke off after just a couple months of use.

I have both the funtainer thermos jar and this one. This one is SO much better.

- the lid is so much easier to clean (the funtainer has very thin slits in the lid which are a pain in the butt to get any scrub into unless you have the camelbak brush (awesome device by the way; camelbak cleaning brush kit)). this lid has wide slits into which i can fit at least my pinky.

- keeps food hot longer than funtainer. if i have just boiled soup/noodles, i have to put 3-4 ice cubes into the jar (no joke!) to get it so it won't burn my kids at lunch (approx 4hrs away). prior to that my kids weren't eating much and i finally asked and they said it was too hot.

- can be dishwasher top shelf

- jar is wide mouthed, easy for eating out of and cleaning with bottle brush (nuby 2 pack bottle brush is the best and longest lasting by the way)

- easily leak proof

- 10oz is more than enough for my kid in kindergarten

- remains easy to open for the kids (just make sure you don't screw on too tight, snug enough to not leak)

- it looks elegant

i honestly don't think they can improve upon this. i replaced all my funtainer jars immediately. as they have black and white lids in the 10 oz range, so i got different colors for my two kids to keep myself organized.

So, I bought the Thermos model of this size about 3 yrs ago. It was excellent. I assume that they wanted to update this with a BPA free lid. But the redesign is an epic fail. I hope Thermos takes note.

- The new design is wider and has a square edged lid. The result is that it is just a bit too wide to get your hand around and extremely uncomfortable to open when the lid is stuck. The old lid could easily be palmed with your hand and opened no matter how tight it was put on.

- This one has a ridge inside rather than being a straight cylinder. Makes it tougher to clean and narrows the mouth of the opening at the same time. Both negatives.

Even when I skip the preheating, my soup stays hot for the five hours till lunch. Not just warm, but out-of-the-pan hot. Highly recommend.

My son will only eat mac n cheese for lunch so I have to send a thermos to school every day. I like this one because it keeps the mac and cheese hot until lunch time AND I can put it in the dishwasher.

I also like that it is plain outside. A few years ago I got him a Transformers thermos. It still works, but he doesn't want to use Transformers any more. I get it, but I don't want to buy any more things that will be "not cool" in a year or two.

TIP: Want your thermos to stay hot longer? I add boiling water to the thermos in the morning to warm it before I add the mac & cheese. I have a Keurig so I fill the thermos with hot water and put the lid on while I make the mac and cheese, then pour the water out and add the mac and cheese. It stays hot longer that way. If you wanted to store something cold in it, just put the empty thermos in the fridge the night before and fill it the next morning. It makes a difference!

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that my son said it is a little hard for him to open. He's 9. It's not hard at all for grownups to open, BTW.
