My daughter recently wanted to start having leftovers for lunch instead of sandwiches so we ordered her this. I read other reviews stating that their food was cold by lunch but took a chance and here is what I found. One, macaroni and cheese is almost cold by the time you put in on the dinner table, so bad choice for this. Two, you have to properly heat the thermos. I add really hot water and screw the lid on. This keeps the water hot and also heats the lid so when you put in your hot food it isn't losing heat by warming up the lid. I have put lasagna and meatloaf in the thermos and four hours later it is still warm. I microwave the food till it is hot then pour out the hot water from the thermos, quickly dry, and add food. There is no such thing as a product that will do these extra steps for you. If you want a conveniently small little thermos to fit in your lunch bag you have to treat it like a small little thermos. The extra prep time (which takes just minutes) insures a warm lunch. I would definitely buy this product again or give as a gift.
Update: My daughter wanted to bring juice to school so we tried two methods. First we filled with water and ice and let it sit for a few minutes then dumped the water and filled with juice. 5 hours later it was still cold. Second we just filled the thermos with juice and then put it in the fridge overnight and juice was cold 5 hours later. She just loves this product.

I was a bit hesitant to purchase since there was only 1 review for this item, but I took the gamble. Great item! See video review for details.

My son is really peculiar with food.

He's not a big fan of sandwiches and several other types of "typical" food you would pack for your kid's lunch.
He loves fruits, but we couldn't just pack fruits forever.

We wanted to pack warm food, like rice, soup, stew, etc, stuff we know he likes and would eat.

We generally pack it around 7:30 AM and it's still warm by lunch.

A few hints and tips we got elsewhere:
- before packing the food, put some hot water in the thermos for a minute. Putting hot food in a cold thermos will lower the food temperature a little bit.
- pack really hot food. The hotter the food, the warmer it will be by lunch.

I've bought 4 Funtainers and they work really well! I recently tested them over 3 very hot (90+ degree) and very long days at the Sesame Place amusement park which has very little shading. I was impressed by how well they worked.

OVERVIEW
========
All Funtainers are BPA free. That's the main reason why I bought them. The lids fit very well and if properly screwed on, they will not leak.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL
===================
The Funtainers work very well in keeping things cool in the 3-4 hour range.

If you will be out all day (such as during a heat wave at a theme park) you can further extend the cooling protection for an additional few hours by doing the following:

- Use an insulated lunch box/soft cooler
- Use an ice pack
- Put the Funtainer in the freezer the night before (without the lid and without any liquids)

Since it's summer, I haven't tested how well it keeps things warm but it is supposed to be long enough to keep food warm from breakfast time to lunchtime. An insulated lunch box/soft cooler will also extend this a bit.

CLEANING
=========
The wide mouth of the Funtainer makes it easily hand washable. You wont have trouble using a sponge to clean the interior.

After calling the Thermos customer service, they still recommend handwashing them rather than using a dishwasher. The heat from the dishwasher will eventually wear down the water-tight seal of the lid and the bottom rubberized plastic may come off. Also the paint on the exterior (used for the cartoon characters) may wear down.

The silicone (or rubber?) O-ring that is used to tightly seal the lid can be easily removed for cleaning if you are concerned about mildew. But I would only recommend doing it periodically as stretching it may reduce the lifespan of it.

ADDITIONAL TIPS
===============
If you can't find the Funtainer design that you want on Amazon, you may want to check your local stores. I was surprised to see them on sale at Toys R Us.

If you have a young kid, try to see if they are able to open the Funtainer by themselves or they may go hungry the first day of school. Since the lids can be attached semi-loose to very tight, you may want to experiment what works best in your case.

The vacuum insulation mechanism works great, as many other reviewers have mentioned. The body is made of high quality stainless steel that is quite resistant to scratches. The bottom plastic "shoe" helps absorb shock when it is dropped and prevents dents to the bottom. Two issues I have with this unit : (1) it is too small even for my 3rd grade girl's lunch. Save yourself some trouble, buy the 16 oz. (stainless king). The outside dimension is almost the same for these two although the 16 oz. unit is slightly taller but holds far more food. (2) there is a deep groove in the lid that is very difficult to clean. My hubby tends to overlook this crevice and mold would grow in two days if the jar was used for sticky food.

I've bought and tested so many thermos containers and am very happy that finally there is one model that lives up to its advertisement. This Thermos funtainer keeps hot soup hot for At least 10 hours and hot solid food at least warm after 4 hours (these were the 2 time durations I happened to test it.....so it could have been even longer)....highly recommend it !!!

Although made by the same company, the Thermos Foogo is far below par with his Thermos Funtainer model. Foogo did not keep anything warm after 2 hours.

My biggest complaint was the toxic smell that permeated my child's chicken noodle soup. We we washed the container, pre-heated it with hot water and let it sit for 10 minutes. Dumped the hot water, added the pre-cooked chicken noodle soup. Screwed lid on and sent it with my 11 year old to school. He said he ate some of it, but it has a weird taste. I opened the container about 10 hours after preparing it... and it smelled like chemicals. My stomach turned at what my child just ate.. he ate about 1/8 of the container (thankfully). So I've put this in my dishwasher (not recommended) in hopes to "clean" it so well there is no chance of chemical residue. And will TEST again. This time not eating the food. Looking at the container, I was disappointed to see a MADE IN CHINA sticker. (See pictures)

I bought this Thermos in February for my car-obsessed kindergartener to take to school for lunch. As he's a picky eater, I also often bring his favorite food in it when our family goes out to dinner.

Pros:
- Perfect size for young kids
- Seems to keep the food pretty warm
- Fits easily in both my son's lunchbox and my purse

Cons:
- Hard for my son to open by himself (some days he wasn't eating lunch till we requested a teacher's aide help him)
- After 6 months, the picture is more than half rubbed off, and I have only hand-washed this using the non-scrubby side of the sponge

When it comes time to replace this I will go with a plain container that will still look good as new for years. Also would love to find one with a top that snaps on instead of twisting.
