Screw lids are fine for food jar, but not for a coffee mug,
By feldspar (Fredericksburg, VA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Thermos Nissan 16-Ounce Stainless-Steel Insulated Dual Purpose Food Jar (Kitchen)
Although Thermos Nissan products are among the best vaccuum insulated containers on the market, this dual purpose jar falls short due to its attempt to be dual purpose. As a food jar it is great. But as a coffee/drink mug it becomes less useful on account of what makes it such a good food jar -- that is, the screw on top design. Remember, there are two tops that come with this jar, and both must be screwed on when used. That's fine for a food jar that you want to make sure your noodles and soup don't escape due to a pressure fit lid accident. But a screw top design for a coffee mug is inconvenient. In short, if you want a food jar this product will work great. But if you are primarily interested in a coffee/drink mug, a better product would be the Timolino 20 oz. @tanium II Travel Mug.

Good if you use it right,

You can't tighten the lid on this, you have to demonstrate some mechanical sympathy and turn it to the closed position. It's not really a screw thread, it's a bayonet fitting. So it only turns so far, like you gas cap but without the torque limiting thing. Treat it right and it seals correctly and works for years. I've been using the 20oz version for around 3 years and it still works perfectly.

Best mug ever for desk use,

It takes a few attempts to master how to fasten the lid but once you find the position to put the lid in before fastening it, this is the best ever mug for use at your desk! I have been using one for several years and found that its the only one I see for sale that is thermos insulated AND has a larger base than top so that clumsy guys like me do not spill my cup over as often. All the others are narrow at the bottom to fit in auto cup holders. It also has non skip rubber bottom. And you can leave a hot cup of coffee alone for a couple HOURS and come back to find it nearly as hot as when you left it. The next time you knock over your coffee and ruin papers on your desk remember to buy one of these!

Keeps soup hot for over 5 hrs. Will not tip over on my desk. Doesn't mark table tops (rubberized bottom). Will not leak (with solid cap installed). No dribble top for sipping coffee (second supplyed lid). Easy to clean, I can reach the in-side with my hand.

Don't buy this as a coffee mug; Nissan quality is not evident,

This review is from: Thermos Nissan 16-Ounce Stainless-Steel Insulated Dual Purpose Food Jar (Kitchen)
This is sold as a dual purpose mug; as such it comes with two tops: a sealed top for food storage and a "sipping" top for beverage dispensing. The sealed top fits and works great; threads are closely sized to the ones on the container and it seals very well. The "sipping" top is another matter: the threads fit so loosely on the container that lid threads "cam" off the container threads when tightened, resulting in leakage (coffee all over clothes and auto seat). I returned the first one and got a replacement; the second is slightly better but you need a torque wrench to get it just right. I returned that one also.I am a machinist with some familiarity with mold making for plastic products. My take is that the mold they constructed for the "sipping" lid is incorrect for the plastic they shooting it with. (All plastics shrink during molding and different blends of plastic shrink at different rates; it is as much art as science to match the shrinkage rate to the size needed on the final product). So maybe the quality control on the plastic they are using has slipped or maybe they constructed the mold improperly to begin with (molds cost thousands of dollars and it is not uncommon to get one wrong). And maybe since the product is now manufactured in China (so much for the famous Nissan quality) they just got sloppy. Oh, and my e-mails to Nissan/Thermos received no response.

SUPER CUP!!!!!!!!!,
By JJreal (OHIO) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Thermos Nissan 16-Ounce Stainless-Steel Insulated Dual Purpose Food Jar (Kitchen)
Hello,I have owned the older straight version of this cup for plus 9 years. I recently purchased this cup as a replacement. Not because my old cup failed to work. Just for cosmetic reasons only. First I am not a coffee or tea beverage drinker. I drink DIET COKE and with lots of ice. I use the solid lid which keeps the factory dirt out. I drive a lift truck at work nothing get spilled. It keeps cold all day with no outside condensation to drip on equipment. Just remember you need to remove the gasket from the lid each time you clean it (air dry it over night). Otherwise it can get nasty. If you over tighten it the seal will fail so don't. If you don't keep the gasket clean it will fail to seal. I do wish Thermos Nissan would add a taller lip above the threads but, I have learned to use it without dripping the COKE all over me. I am in the process of fabricating a custom cup holder out of aluminum stock. Due to the unusual wide base. I think the benefits of this cup far out weigh the negative comments. I would purchase it again. Hope this helps.

Food Jar/Mug Unfit as a Mug,

I had been looking long and hard for a good insulated coffee mug that would not easily tip over to replace my old mug that tipped over regulalry. When I found this one I thought, "Finally a decent mug to buy!". I loved the handle and the way it kept the coffee warm, but it it totally unusable! The lid does not seal well. Efforts to tighten the lid down further to reduce leakage result in stripped threads. Now the lid won't tighten at all! It leaks horribly. My poor white shirt stained by it! Pass on this one until they redesign the lid! Otherwise it's great. If only the lid actually sealed! Grrrrrr.

Nissan SS Insulated Mug,

This review is from: Thermos Nissan 16-Ounce Stainless-Steel Insulated Dual Purpose Food Jar (Kitchen)
This is the best mug for keeping your beverage (mainly coffee for me) hot or cold (5+ hrs. min). The inside is isolated from the outside shell. You can tell because when you tap the inside with a spoon it rings. With others you can feel the warmth/cold on the outside when you hold it and the inside doesn't ring quite the same. This is the third Nissan mug I have owned and they are all great. The top may be a little inconvenient to use but that is minor. Besides, if you happen to knock the mug over with the lid on you doen't have a spill!

The best mug EVER,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Thermos Nissan 16-Ounce Stainless-Steel Insulated Dual Purpose Food Jar (Kitchen)
Seriously, this is really the best mug ever. My first one only had to be replaced after it was run over by a car and the base came off. This mug will keep your drinks hot for hours, swop lids and you can drink then swop back and you can throw it on the back seat or where ever you want and it won't spill or leak. I have 2 now for work each day, I make my drinks at 7.30am and some days it is 2pm or later when I get to the second one and it is still hot. These also hold a lot more than your average cup, probably because other mugs don't stay as hot there is no point in making them bigger - who wants 6oz of hot coffee then 10oz of cold. If you are tired of trying coffee mugs and always being dissapointed then get this mug and you won't have to shop again.

Indestructible, "Spill-proofer",

I have an original from 10 years ago. Now it is very beat up and friends make fun of me, but it still keeps my morning coffee hot for hours. I don't know how many times it has fallen off the car roof as I drove away forgetful. And if you work in an environment where spills could mean disaster, the screw tight lid is the best. I was surprised to find this on Amazon, I have been looking for a replacement for quite some time. I bought two, just in case. I also bought two of the little sister, "Nissan 11-Ounce Stainless Steel Coffee and Tea Traveler". It is the same quality, a screw tight lid, but smaller and perfect for commuting beverage.Nissan 11-Ounce Stainless Steel Coffee and Tea Traveler. |
