Great Tumbler,
By Empyreal (LA, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Thermos Nissan 18-Ounce Stainless-Steel Insulated Travel Tumbler (Kitchen)
I, like many college kids, cannot survive without caffeine of some sort. This tumbler does a great job of insuring that I have hot coffee until I'm done drinking it. Everybody else has commented on its great insulation abilities, but I'd like to add my own experience. I like to have my coffee slightly hot, but not tongue-burning hot. So I always add a couple of ice cubes. Well, I got my coffee to the perfect temperature at 7:30 this morning and headed off to class. I sipped on it all during class and work, and the temperature stayed perfect. When I finished my coffee at 12:30 this afternoon, it was STILL the perfect temperature. Absolutely fabulous. As for the other features: The outside of the tumbler stays cool to the touch, and the rubber bottom keeps it from slipping around. However, because of it's design, it could tip over if you knock against it. So don't plan on putting this on your dashboard or floorboard of your car or anything like that. It is the perfect width at the bottom to fit into most cupholders. The rubber around the middle of the tumblers makes for an easy non-slip grip, and the top screws on easily and tightly. My only complaint is that the snap top for the sipper hole does not "snap." It just kind of closes, but it isn't securely closed. So, don't go putting it in a briefcase or backpack, because it is likely to leak onto your stuff. I havent actually tried this, though (and I don't plan to), so I could be wrong. Although it isn't spill proof if you hold it upside down or on its side, it is spill proof while you drink. THe rim of the lid is much higher than the base of the lid, so it prevents coffee from spilling all over you while you're sipping it (unless you're an extraordinarily untalented drinker). When you flip the top open, you do need to hold it open or it might flip down onto your nose - this happened to me and I wound up having to wipe drops of coffee off my nose. It's super easy to clean - just like any other tumbler. so, overall, I would completely recommend this to anybody who needs a travel tumbler that does keep coffee the perfect temperature. If you need something leak-proof, however, because you plan on putting it into your brief case or something, I would recommend getting a different Nissan thermos.

Excellent Tumbler for Persons on the Go!,

I received this tumbler for my birthday, and it is one of the best presents I have ever been given. I have a couple of the larger, wide-bottomed Thermos mugs, but they are only practical at home or at the office. They simply don't fit into the cup holder of a car. This tumbler holds a generous amount of hot coffee, and keeps it hot for hours. The swinging, snap lid is easy to open and close. It will snap to a fixed, open position as well as to a closed position. With this tumbler, I can leave the house early in the morning with a full container of coffee, sipping from it as I drive my son to school. I can continue sipping on the way to the gym and back. If I have any coffee left, I then take it to the office with me. The portability is simply GREAT. Although I use this tumbler exclusively for hot coffee, it will work well with any hot or cold beverage. It's my favorite Thermos product so far, and is definitely well-worth the price!

I have lived with this mug for months, now, and I love it. It fits into my car drink holder (which many mugs do not), and I like the lock back device which keeps the drinking hole cover out of your way (I have a beard). The tapered shape and nobby rubber grip feels comfortable and secure in the hand. The cap isn't leak proof, but it screws on tightly enough to prevent spills unless you knock it over, at which point liquid can seep out of the drinking hole.It really does what it's supposed to do, which is keep my coffee hot. This is especially true if you follow the instructions and rinse the mug with hot water prior to putting the coffee in. It stays hot enough for me much longer than it takes me to drink 18 ounces, although I do not like my coffee scalding hot. I find that I use this at work and home for a desk mug, as well as using it as a travel mug, as it is easy to carry around, and it has its own rubber coaster on the bottom. It holds a LOT of liquid. Two minor negatives: You can't microwave it (but you wouldn't need to, would you, unless the coffee was already cold in the pot?), and you can't put it in the dishwasher. I usually rinse it with hot water daily, and give it a hand wash in the sink when it needs it. Note that the outside is stainless, but the inside will stain. I truly recommend this product.

Very Well Insulated, but Topheavy and Leaky,

The Nissan 18-Ounce Stainless steel insulated travel tumbler is my daily companion on my way to work and often at work. It keeps my coffee hot for hours. Sometimes if I take too big of a sip I still burn my mouth an hour or more after pouring it. However, the mug always has a way of tipping over, and the lid is definitely not leakproof. This is by far the most prone-to-tip over mug that I've ever used regularly.
I am going to purchase the leakproof one with the handle and give that a try and see if I can enjoy hot coffee without the mess. I think that I would recommend you go with the leakproof one as well.

I expected more,

First of all, the odd shape prevents it from being used in my cup holders in my car (Honda Civic). It's too skinny and too tall. Secondly, it's not spill proof. I'm not even certain that it's spill resistant. If it tips over you're going to get liquid everywhere. That being said, it does keep my coffee hot. It's just such an impractical design that I wish I had something else. I've searched and can't find any 18-20oz cups that keep coffee as hot that are also spill proof.

Gives drinks an odd taste,
By Bobby932 (Oakland, CA) - See all my reviews

The Nissan Thermos does an excellent job at keeping drinks warm. A cup of coffee will stay warm for at least 2-3 hours. However, the rubber seal near the top of the container (the one that seals the plastic top to the metal bottom) imparts an odor to all hot drinks. I've also found that liquid gets under the rubber seal making cleaning difficult. I don't use this product any more because of the odor.

Pretty good tumbler with some caveats,
By Craig D. (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Thermos Nissan 18-Ounce Stainless-Steel Insulated Travel Tumbler (Kitchen)
Overall this is a pretty good travel tumbler. With its vacuum layer between the outer and inner stainless walls it provides hours of piping hot beverages on the go.
A few caveats however. I was absolutely stumped why the manufacturer would not create a venting hole in the lid to allow for air exchange as you're drinking. As a result of this oversight the hot coffee will often hold back as you tilt it to drink, only to come gushing onto your upper lip in with red hot fury when the liquid tension is broken. A 1/8 inch hole drilled quickly into the lid solved that problem with little fuss. Second caveat: after using the tumbler almost daily for a year or more you'll begin to notice discoloration of the inside. Doesn't seem to affect the flavor of the drinks but it's strange nonetheless. Third caveat: if you put it in the dishwasher repeatedly the black rubber sleeve will eventually get gummy and sticky. I learned my lesson with the first tumbler of this type that I owned and only hand wash this one. Fourth and final caveat: The flip-top tab that's supposed to minimize spillage is annoying in that, once you flip it up to sip your beverage, you are rewarded with a dot of coffee on the tip of your nose. A drop of coffee always gets retained in the flip-top tab and you have to remember to blot it out with a napkin to avoid this. I'm sometimes slow on the uptake so it took a while for me to remember this in time to avoid it. Certainly not the end of the world but a little irritating. Despite all these quirks it's one of the better ones I've come across and is worth the price in the end. Especially if you own a drill.

Great insulation, minor design flaw,

This is a great travel mug, it keeps my coffee hot for 4 hours if I don't have a chance to drink it. Unfortunately, there is a design flaw with the lid - every time I flip up the stopper on the lid and tip my cup towards me so that I can drink, the stopper predictably puts 1 drop of coffee on the bridge of my nose. My solution has been to just keep the stopper up so that it doesn't have a chance to drip coffee on me.

The BEST insulated travel tumbler,
By "brianfp" (San Antonio, Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Thermos Nissan 18-Ounce Stainless-Steel Insulated Travel Tumbler (Kitchen)
I have owned this item for over 6 years now, and it still works as well as the day I bought it. I use it almost every morning to keep my coffee or tea hot, and in the afternoon to keep my water cold. Under both conditions it insulates for hours, eliminating the need to 'chug' your coffee while it's still warm (I hate cold coffee!). I recommend this for anyone looking for the best insulated travel mug around!

Bacteria grows under both seals,
By Steve Pinehurst "Steve Pinehurst" (Pinehurst, NC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Thermos Nissan 18-Ounce Stainless-Steel Insulated Travel Tumbler (Kitchen)
There are two putty-colored seals on the mug: one under the lid that seals the lid to the body's collar, and another that seals the collar permanently to the stainless steal body. After a year of daily use and washing by hand, both seals hid bacteria underneath. I squeezed a cotton swab along the seals and black, inky liquid seeped out.
I used a Water-Pic to squirt water with some bleach under the seals to sanitize them. I have abandoned casual hand washing in favor of my scalding hot dishwasher. I have had occasional minor mouth sores on the inside of my lower lip. I can't definitively blame the mug, but I still have my suspicions that the mug's bacteria might be causing the mouth sores. I'm going through this ordeal because I LOVE USING THIS TUBBLER! **** |
