After packing cold sandwiches for lunch for my kids for 3 years, I saw this at Bed Bath and beyond. I bought two of these food jars and started to pack hot lunches for them a few times a week. Initally I was not sure if it really keep food hot, so I was contantly asking them if it was still hot at lunch. One day I had used the food jar for hot chocolate (in addition to using one of my "cheapo" thermos) A few hours later, when i was pouring the hot chocolate out, my cheapo one was barely warm, while this food jar was still steamy hot that i had to wait for it to cool. so yes, it does work well. (i am glad i bought this one over the plastic barrel looking ones at bed bath and beyond-that one was only $5)

I recommend before filling the food jar w/ food, to fill it w/ hot water for a few minutes to "heat" up the thermo. while waiting, you can cook your food or heat up your food.

this works great except you can't fill it right to the top, when you close the lid it will spill over. also because of its tight seal, it might be harder for kindergarteners-1st graders to open at school. sometimes my kids ask the lunch aides for help in opening it. But i will be buying one more next year when my 3rd kid starts kindergarten.

I used to use this every day for lunch/dinner between long classes. It's surprisingly efficient and will keep something reasonably heated for half the day. From my experience, it will keep things hot longer the more fluid it is, but I liked to put things like lasagna and meatball/pasta with lots of sauce in there. Mmmm. Be sure to wash thoroughly, never put in the dishwasher, and gently clean the silicone O-ring. If you're worried about leaks, something I've never experienced as a student, just drop it in a big ziploc bag. The orange dimples on the Thermos Nissan version are indented, making the lid easier to remove. It also seems to be better quality in build than the plain "Thermos" food jar version.

P.S.: Always preheat (or precool) any steel insulated container with boiling water (or place in the fridge) for at least 15 minutes or so. When you put your hot food in, you will notice that the outside of the container exudes heat, especially through the cap. This is normal. The performance is much better this way.

I have been looking for a long time for an insulated container that really retains heat. Most of them don't work well - but this one does.

I did a careful test comparing this to another typical 10oz stainless food contained that is supposed to be vacuum insulated. I pre-heated both with 172 degree hot water, then filled each with more hot water and verified the water in each was 172 degrees. Then I closed both and left them on the counter (68 degrees) for 3 hours. After three hours, the water in the other one was only 97 degrees, while the water in this one was still hot at 133 degrees. That's a huge difference. This one will actually keep your hot lunch hot.

Beautiful design is always nice but the reason I bought this one was for it's practical use. It's small (but perfect for a toddlers lunch), very easy to clean because of it's design and stainless steel will last a long time.
The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of the proportions, could have been less high but wider which would have provided easier food transfer.

I use this pretty much every day for lunch. It keeps soup hot for up to 5 hours, especially if you follow directions and let it sit for 5 minutes with boiling water before filling it.
It's the perfect portion size for lunch. It also does a magnificant job keeping chilled items cold and crisp. It's spillproof and has survived several punishing drops on the asphalt from my messenger bag.

Keeps food or drink very warm or very cold for a very long time. Often times I make tea in it at night and it's still very hot the next day by my lunchtime. I definitely recommend this for thermos needs as it works in keeping foods the desired temperature and for a very long time too.

I have four kids and make their school lunches five days a week. I have used just about every thermos on the market and have found that, not only are they bulky, but they didn't keep the lunches all that hot. When I was looking for a new thermos for them, I needed something compact, where the base wouldn't fall off, that wasn't heavy, that kept the food warm, and had a wide neck that would make it easier to put meatballs or chicken fingers in without getting squashed. I took a chance on these because they already had a good review and I'm glad I did. This thermos looked smaller than the one we were using before but actually it's larger. It's very easy to hand wash and fits great in the lunch boxes. It was everything I was looking for. I strongly recommend following the directions and filling it with boiling water for about 15 minutes before adding the hot food. It keeps the food very hot until lunchtime and makes it easier to pack something besides soup all the time. This is the best lunch box thermos we have ever had.

I use this product daily to pack healthy, hot lunches for my school-aged children. It's perfect also if you are always on the go (like me) and want food when you need it. I save tons of money by packing healthy left-overs like chili and spaghetti and the food is ready when I am hungry (no dangerous microwaving).

This thermos works great for hot lunches for my kids. It has just the right amount of food storage for a good portion of mac' n cheese, soup, rice and meatballs, etc. Food stays warm (though does cool some) especially if you put it in piping hot. I chose this because it isn't plastic and won't leach dioxins in to food. The directions say not to use the dishwasher, so I hand wash the lid but put the main part in the dishwasher. I only wish I could put the whole thing in the dishwasher.

The review below was rewritten on 2/7/11, today is 2/17/11. Since then we have received a replacement. Our first grader told us that the lid's easy to open, and the rice is warmer than before. I've changed the rating to 4-star, as I have not tested out the jar myself.

we've been packing hot rice for our 1st grader for the past 3 1/2 months in this thermos. he has come home and made comments about the lid been difficult to open by the lunchroom ladies. we didn't know what he was talking about until we had to open it recently ourselves. it took both my husband and i multiple tries to open the lid. now i'm so appreciative of the lunchroom ladies for their patience and efforts. as for the rice itself, it was luke warm at best. the rice was in the thermos less than 4 hours.
