Thermos generally makes excellent quality, durable products. This mug keeps hot liquids very hot and cold liquids very cold, for a long time. Also, the tab over the drinking hole is detachable so you can clean out the sludge buildup. Most importantly, it has a stainless steel interior. Plastic interiors retain flavors and make drinks taste terrible. Unfortunately, the lid just slides off an on, really easily. So when this wobbly mug tips over, the lid comes out and the coffee follows. If you lie the mug on its side, tie a thread to the lid, and tie the other end of the thread to a centipede, the centipede will have no problem pulling it off. I tested this. After pulling the lid off with ease, the centipede yawned sarcastically. This type of lid is much less costly for them to manufacture. I would have paid a few bucks more for a screw-on lid. Don't waste your money.

2 Stars NOT 5. Amazon won't let me adjust the number of stars.

Updating the review after a couple of years of use of this product:

The good:

These things are great at keeping coffee hot. They are a double-walled, vacuum insulated cup. They are not those cheap plastic or single walled jobs you get as company promo/schlock. These will keep your coffee hot for a really long time - an hour easily. Warm enough to enjoy for a couple of hours.

The lid comes apart for easy cleaning, there's no hidden cavity under the slider for coffee/cream/milk sludge to build up. The lid snaps apart and back together easily so you can get the lid clean inside and out and in-between. (Once you buy one, you have to take your old coffee cup's lid apart and look at all the slime you've been sucking on every time you drank coffee!)

There's a subtle set of notches on the lid where your lip makes contact near the drinking hole. Without looking, you can tell if you have the cup in the correct position for drinking because you can either feel the notches or not. Can't feel the notches? You don't have the drinking hole in the right position.

The bad:

Thermos needs to work on is having a larger air hole so when you are drinking your coffee it actually flows out of the cup. The air hole is small and when coffee splashes up against it, it can make getting coffee out of the drinking hole difficult. Pushing the slide cover more towards the center position usually gets enough air flowing that you can drink that steamy hot coffee.

The ugly:

The lid has a pretty serious design defect. The lid is kept on by a single rubber gasket that presses outwards on the side of the mug. The inside of the mug, where the gasket makes contact, is slanted outwards. As the gasket pushes out on the wall of the interior, it lifts the lid off. A light bump results in the lid popping off easily. Even coffee sloshing up against the lid while traveling can be enough to pop the lid off. In fact, the lid can spontaneously pop loose just sitting still. You probably won't notice the lid being loose until you pour hot coffee down your chest. Then you will definitely notice it!

I've worked around this by making sure the gasket if flipped over. Think of a hose washer laying on the ground. You can flip the washer over so the top side is now the bottom side. Same with the gasket on the lid of this travel mug. The gasket seems to get "trained" in one orientation so in one position it does a better job of holding the lid down than the other. Fill your mug, put the lid on, and give the lid a slight sideways bump. If the lid pops off, then take it off, flip the gasket, and test again. Hopefully the lid stays on a little bit better after flipping the gasket. Then, every time you pick up the coffee cup, just give the lid a little push down to ensure the lid has not popped off before you drink. It becomes a habit after a while.

What a hassle!

These guys need to do a better job of lid design. I'm surprised they've not recalled this product due to the risk of pouring scalding beverages all over yourself.

How can this be loved? Yes it does keep stuff HOT! I wanted a mug that did that and I had seen this at Brookstone during Christmas shopping, but after, they were out of stock, they referred me to Target for the same exact ones..so I bought it there for about 15 bucks.. First off...What gives with the slide on lid with a rubber skim seal???? This thing pops off at its own when it wants to, so be careful! Second, if you even remotely get close to tipping this while full (like getting into your auto), the lid will pop off!! ... and if it was a minor bump, the lid will leak thru the removable (to clean) slider/closer. So, its very awkward in how it must be handled. An email to Thermos regarding the quality of this has gone unanswered. I love the mug, the color, style the feel in my hands, fits the cupholder great, but these short-comings are just too much to enjoy it. I will seek out a discontinued Starbucks Curve Mug (which my wife has). That thing is a tank! It also keeps things HOT, rubber grip, spill-proof lid and SCREW ON lid... Thermos...If you add the screw on no leak lid, you have a winner. I will pay good money for a mug that performs, so I will continue on my search.. Hope this helps..

4.0 out of 5 stars Despite shortcomings, still a fantastic travel mug, December 13, 2009

We have three of these in our household and we call them "magic cups" because is seems coffee gets hotter after being poured into them. They are that well insulated. The lid problems noted by other reviewers are real, and appear to have gotten worse during the model's life because the ones we've had for years aren't as bad as the one I just bought.

Some of the suggestions for dealing with it are good (flipping the gasket over periodically). My trick is to dry the inside edge of the cup and gasket with a napkin before sticking the top on. I've also learned to instinctively push down the top before picking up the mug from the car's cup holder.

These extra steps are a drag, but the treat of having drinkably hot coffee for hours on a long drive or around the house on the weekend just can't be beat. I just ordered 4 for Christmas gifts (4 for 3 offer makes them $15 each). If Thermos could solve the lid problem, this mug would be worth $25 easy.

Combine this mug with one of my other favorite items, the Cuisinart DTC-975BKN Programmable Automatic Brew-and-Serve 12-Cup Thermal Coffeemaker, Black coffee maker (DTC-975), and you're set with hot coffee all day long.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good and bad, August 8, 2010
This review is from: Thermos 16 Ounce Stainless Steel Travel Tumbler (Kitchen)
I've had mine for about 2 years. I've owned a nissan thermos that I used daily for about 10 years. That thing is the best ever. So naturally when my wife gave me this travel mug I was eager to hold onto it. I've left cheaper models in hotels, airports, and rental cars all over the country.

Pros:

Keeps coffee hot and fresh for a long time. Even longer if you're good about closing the latch.

Cons:

As many have stated the insecurity of the lid. It's best if you have the inside and seal relatively dry when you get ready to roll. Another negative is the inside, while stainless steel hasn't proven to be stainless. There is coffee residue build up that I have yet to be able to remove.

Best that I have found so far. Yet, my quest continues.

2.0 out of 5 stars Excellent insulation, horrible lid, August 1, 2009

I've been a fan of Thermos products for a while and when I got a new car (and my old thermos mugs no longer fit) I went to Thermos for a replacement. Purchased these and at first I thought they were pretty nice. They do an INCREDIBLE job of keeping cold things cold, and hot things hot. BUT, the lid has gotten to the point that it falls of at the drop of the hat, even when drinking. Reaching down to the cup holder takes care so as not to bump the lid off. Drinking from the cup takes care as not to tip the lid off. They have become almost worthless because of the ease at which the lids pop off.

I do not recommend these.

I gave it two stars only because of how well they insulate. But, they are not worth anything more because of the massive lid design problem.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lid pops off if full mug is tipped over, July 15, 2009
This review is from: Thermos 16 Ounce Stainless Steel Travel Tumbler (Kitchen)
The mug is excellent at keeping coffee hot but it is useless as a spill-proof mug. The lid is not a screw-on design and instead relies on a single rubber seal-ring and friction to hold it on. The problem is the rubber seal-ring is a lose fit and end up too close to the top of the mug rim. If the mug is accidentally tipped over you will probably end up with the lid popping off and the entire contents spilled all over the table! That is hat happened to me on my very first use!! To make things worse, the bottom of the mug has rounded edges which makes it easy to topple over a completely full mug.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific travel mug, December 30, 2011
By
This review is from: Thermos 16 Ounce Stainless Steel Travel Tumbler (Kitchen)
I have 2 of these mugs and use them every day. Things I love about this mug is that the lid components are easy to pop up and clean. Secondly, the stainless steel double walls keep my drinks hot for a very long time. Third, it's the perfect size for my daily Starbucks latte. I like the feature where I don't have to screw on a lid as I find those cumbersome. It is easy to hold and when I want to get to the foam in my latte, I can easily pop off the lid. The colors you can choose are beautiful. I love love love this mug and after trying numerous types, this is the one I have settled on as the mug of choice. I see other reviews that indicate that the mugs get wobbly, but I swear I have never had this problem. The mug lid is secure once it's on. I have had the screw on types before, and those leak too if you don't screw them on properly. I just enjoy the convenience of a pop off lid.

I have this product and I have never had an issue with my lid sliding off. I am sure though with time the rubber seal inside will lose all ability to hold and I will have to buy a new one. The air hole in the lid could be a bit bigger or better designed.

But as far as keeping coffee hot, well, oh my word. It keeps it hot for 3 hours easy in 34 degree weather.

Overall I would buy this mug again and again. I probably will have to with the rubber ring lid, but this mug works well. I even bought one for the mother of my daughter for Christmas.
