I purchased this and returned it for two reasons. The main reason is the 360 degree lid--while cool in concept--does not allow much liquid at all through. So, you have to tilt your head WAY back to get anything out of it (and off of the road in front of you if you happen to want to use this as an in-the-car mug). The very deep lip on this adds to the problem. This...

I live in the middle of nowhere. I drive 90 minutes (each way) to work. I drink a lot of coffee, and have tried a lot of mugs. This is the one I prefer (note: not everyone in my house agrees).
Yes, the closing mechanism can be finicky. But, when closed properly, it doesn't leak. I've dropped one of mine hard enough to crack the rim, without losing any of the contents. Even closed improperly, I found it leaked less than I expected. It can't be properly closed or opened, one-handed.
It keeps coffee hot, especially when closed. I've filled it, sealed it, left it, drunk from it an an hour later -- and scalded my tongue. Even open for drinking, the coffee's still warm when I arrive at work.
The instructions say don't put it in the dishwasher. I've put 2 through the dishwasher weekly for years. Neither leaks. "Your mileage my vary." The closing "mechanism" is simple, and thus easy to clean (unlike more complicated devices).
This thing is tough! I have dents, scratches, scrapes, a small crack in the rim, etc. on mine. Doesn't affect them. I expect this thing to be mentioned in my Will, 'cause it'll still be around. (which might explain why the mugs seem to be no longer produced)
I haven't found a cupholder yet, that this won't fit. There's no handle to get in the way. It's not "handed" (can use it from either hand - important point for Lefties!).

This issue for me was an instant deal-breaker because I was buying this item for in the car use.

Also, I found the mechanism to open and close the lid is really clunky. There is some room for error (the mug will leak if you haven't muscled the lid into position perfectly).

I'd recommend the OXO Good Grips Click & Seal Travel Mug which beats this item like a drum for the same money and has a vacuum seal besides.

I love the 360 degree lid! I don't have to line up a little hole with my mouth because when properly opened in the drink position, you can drink from anywhere, anyside! By far, my favorite mug. Keeps drink hot for hours as well...

Best mug I ever had, and I have had many. This one really works. It keeps coffee drinkable for almost 3 hours. Way more than the brands that claim longer but after an hour die. And the way the lid works makes it easy for driving use. No need to look for a special whole or side. Drink from 360 degrees. The closed lid is leakproof so I sometimes put it in my Winter jacket pocket while I carry other stuff. So good.
My rating is Escellent,
Carl Johnson

2.0 out of 5 stars Leaks, hard to use. But it keeps stuff hot pretty well!, January 27, 2011
This review is from: Thermos 14oz Travel Tumbler 360 Degree Lid Stainless Steel/Black - Thermos 2610TRI2 (Electronics)
I'll start with the positives - this mug keeps drinks warm. Also, the lid is simple with no moving parts. There are the two stars, and I'm done with that section.

Now let's get into a little more detail. In my mind, a good travel mug should accomplish 3 primary things:
1. Keep drinks warm
2. Keep the liquid IN when it's closed (I don't want to worry about my coffee spilling while I have my hands full of other stuff)
3. Let the liquid OUT (where you want it) when it's open (i.e., it should be easy to drink from).

This mug only succeeds at ONE of those three things (see above). Even for that, though, there are better options! I have both 12oz and 16oz versions of the Thermos Nissan JMW500P6 16-Ounce Stainless-Steel Backpack Bottle, Silver, which is EXCELLENT at keeping drinks warm. I can drink half my coffee on my way to work, let the other half sit on my desk for a few hours, come back to it, and even the reduced quantity is still warm when it's in the Backpack Bottle. And that's without any preheating or other fussing! That backpack bottle also accomplishes the other two things - it never leaks when it's closed, even when tossed unceremoniously in a backpack, as its name suggests. But when it's open, it's easy to drink - you can take small sips or quicker gulps as needed, but it still won't slosh all over you or spill too fast if you drop it while the top is open.
I also use the Thermos Nissan JMQ400 14-Ounce Leak-Proof Insulated Travel Mug. It's just as leak-proof as the Backpack bottle, and apart from a slightly difficult-to-open lid design, it's easy to drink from and very well-insulated. Great mug if you like handles.

This Thermos 360 mug, on the other hand, clearly fails at points two and three. Regarding the seal when closed, I've "practiced" sealing the lid (as one reviewer suggested) and lined up the special rectangular tab with the opening symbols (as another reviewer suggested) and it liquid still dribbles out when the mug is tipped. This may not be a big deal - some travel mugs simply have a small opening and don't claim to seal at all, and that's OK. But since this one claims to be "sealable", I think it should, oh I don't know, SEAL? None of my other mugs require practice or lining up special tabs, and they seal just fine. So if you ever tip your mug on the way to your car, or if you want to carry it in a bag, look at a different mug/thermos.
Point three (ease of drinking) is such a simple prerequisite for a travel mug that I didn't even realize it was on my list until I tried this thermos. As another reviewer has pointed out, there's a big indentation/ledge inside the mug that holds a good deal of liquid, so if you want to actually FINISH your drink, you have to tip the mug almost to vertical. Unnecessary and potentially dangerous. Poor design. Even when the mug is full, with the lid in the "open/drink" position, it only lets out the liquid at a slow trickle, so you have to leave the mug raised to your lips for a few seconds in order to take a normal-sized sip of coffee. Again, the opening mechanism is a hassle - there's a fine line (literally) between "open for drinking" and "remove lid" - a VERY slight turn makes all the difference between a trickle for drinking and the lid falling off. You want to open this lid as far as possible, so you can try to take a normal-sized sip, but then you're in danger of having the lid come off completely. This might not be so bad for people who like to take really tiny sips of coffee while seated at a table where they can fiddle with a lid, but is no good at all for commuters.
Finally, the rubber grip around the thermos feels slightly loose, like it could potentially come off or rip if it's not treated very gently. The stainless portions will last forever, and the lid (with all its other faults) is a very simple design that doesn't look fragile. But the slightly loose rubber sleeve doesn't inspire confidence.

All that to say - if you're looking for a sealable travel mug that you can actually drink from, there are better options.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT Travel Mug!, November 18, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Thermos 14oz Travel Tumbler 360 Degree Lid Stainless Steel/Black - Thermos 2610TRI2 (Electronics)
This mug just works. I'm a 47 year old Mechanical Engineer and frankly a gadget freak and am extremely selective (picky) about every product I use. Ask my wife, I study EVERYTHING I purchase carefully. I've had every kind of travel mug possible but have never been happy with one until I got this one. I had one for the past 3 years or so but just recently had to order a new one because someone stole mine on a jobsite (you know I'll find you!). I like it so much I ordered two just in case I loose another one.

I drive 2 hours each way to work and it keeps my coffee plenty hot for the trip. I'm a slow drinker and usually take the last few sips when I arrive and the temperature is still very warm. I do of course pre-heat the mug with hot water before filling it with coffee. This should be obvious but reading some of the negative reviews, it's apparently not. There's a fair amount of stainless steel to the cup which will absorb a considerable amount of heat if the cup is cold; so yes pre-heat it first.

Also Ive read a few negative comments from others about the lid.........this thing is nearly perfect. It's 100% of the reason why I purchased my first one. I HATE drinking out of the normal run of the mill fat rimmed travel mugs. This mug is like drinking from a glass. It takes a little practice, but you can twist the lid open more and EASILY control the flow. I open mine to the point where it flows freely but yes it only trickles if it's not in the right spot. Five minutes of practice over the sink with a cup full of water and you're good to go.

The lack of a handle is another big plus no matter if you use it for travel or not. It's just so much easier and more comfortable to grab and use.

All in all this is an outstanding product. I know it sounds crazy, but I'd gladly pay $100 for one.

Doesn't leak, doesn't break when dropped, drink stays hot for hours. You can't ask for more. We now own three and have thrown out all other travel containers.
