Book Description

These Are The Hungry (Yaoi Manga)
Life doesn’t always go as planned. High school sophomore and star catcher Itoshima devoted every fiber of his being to baseball, only to have the cruel mistress that is fate rip his one love in life away from him, due to an irrecoverable injury. Freshman Saitozaki never dreamt that his beginning days of high school, what should be the prime of his youth, would consist of battling incompetent bus schedules, unsympathetic teachers, and punishments that put his very life at risk. He also never imagined having these strange new feelings that have arisen ever since Itoshima crossed his path in his time of need. Is fate playing another harsh trick on this hapless duo, or will Saitozaki and Itoshima take destiny into their own hands and rediscover how to laugh and love?

5.0 out of 5 stars Happily Suprised! April 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
"These are the Hungry" by Sumako Kari is Engaging, Funny & Tender.

I was not too sure about reading "These are the Hungry" because the art on the front did not appeal to me. However, as the other reviewer mentioned, please don't judge this book by its cover! You will be missing out on a wonderful, warm story of two young men who discover their lives aren't going to turn out quite like they expected. The one because his dream is snatched from him in a most painful way. The other because he fell in love with another boy.

The story is charming and romantic, in that first love kind of way. Sumako Kari does a great job of portraying the characters' reactions once they become conscious of the other. An ill at ease hunch of the shoulder. An embarrassed smile. A penetrating stare. Confused brows drawn together. The expressions on the characters' faces are absolutely priceless.

In between the emotional roller coaster that is first love and coping with loss, there is humor. Some of the thoughts that run through the boys' minds are particularly hilarious. Plus, the side characters offer some often funny lines and actions that had me chuckling out loud.

Now, if you "read it all for the nookie", this title is simply not one of those. However, if you only limit yourself to hardcore or explicit pieces, you are missing out on a wealth of amazing mangaka and works. Just like this one.

Koi-Koi is the DMG group that localized this title and it looks really good to me. I didn't have any problem reading the fonts, nor did I notice any mistakes that detracted from the work.

"These are the Hungry" is truly a delightfully sweet manga any BL aficionado should read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute May 5, 2013

This is a very cute and innocent read. Not much sex but more about high school boys and overcoming hardships. The art is cute too and matches the story really well.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nothing special June 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I read this manga a while back and waited so that I may put in a good word in for this manga but sad for me to say that the nearest word I can come up with is average. I dislike the art work. The art was too soft and whimsical for my taste. I could have forgiven the lack of artistic appeal if the the manga had a good story line to make up for the it. But alas no. It was just a run of the mill same old worn out story. I would read this be momentary amuse and it quickly fade out of mind. Would I buy this?? Yes. But would I put it on the list of must read??? No.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cute but a bit slow and inconclusive April 8, 2015

Is like they are together but are not and that is disturbing, the story line has holes but it developed surprisingly good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unfortunate Cover Hides a Story Worth Reading April 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
It's a real shame about the cover. To be honest, if I had not been given a review copy, I probably would not have picked this up based upon the cover. But I'm really glad I did. The inside art is refreshingly original and not at all unattractive. the story itself is on the adorable side. Not the too sweet you'll be sick kind of adorable either. It's the kind where you just want to smile at two puppyish attempts at first love. The characters are are all completely awkward with each other, as they begin moving towards adulthood. Itozaki and his former baseball team mates as they try to work around the loss of baseball as a common ground to their laidback friendship, and the realization that as they are maturing, romance is going to come along, and not always in quite the way they expected. From discovering one's sexuality to the hope of acceptance by friends, and the courtship dance between the two awkward first time lovers, it's achingly bittersweet and more than a little funny. There is some sexual content but it is not overly explicit, and it's just part of the natural progression of the couple's relationship, so if you're looking for erotica, this is not it. It is however a nicely plotted little tale of first love and personal discovery well worth reading.
