Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

How do you measure the strength of a community? By examining its communal institutions, you can see how the community is thriving. Friedman (Reconstructionist Rabbinical Coll.) here examines a key episode in American Jewish social history: the building of orphanages, an attempt to deal with a large problem in a thorough manner by replacing the almshouses and the disorganized efforts of times past. The Jewish orphanages expanded as the waves of Eastern European immigrants swelled, providing refuge and educational opportunities and inculcating both Jewish and American values. This well-written work, based on a doctoral thesis, is recommended for libraries with strong Judaica and American studies collections.
