4.0 out of 5 stars Good for a totally anonymous band, November 17, 2002

I bought this album having no idea what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised with the turnout. CFP really makes a nice blend of bumpin bass lines, synthesizers, and heavy guitar licks to produce an album that sounds like a cross between something Beck, They Might Be Giants, or N.E.R.D. would release. At times in the songs parts get repetitive like some choppy trance mix, but Call Florence Pow makes up for it in other songs with interesting singing patterns and harmonies. Some of their stronger tracks are "Speed G Tappin Master," "I'm Traveling," and the surpisingly mellow "Late Tonight."

5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite band...ever., April 8, 2004

Anyone who's into music for music's sake will love this. Personally, I don't know why they^re not wildly famous. I mean, "Periodic Table" got me through high school. Now, almost through with college, they are still my all-time favourite band. Highly, highly recommended.

I couldn't recomend this album highly enough. Great poppy/punky/groove kind of sound. 57.5 bars and Speed Tappin Master changed my life. I really wish they would put out another album...

The New Jersey/New York/Philly band Call Florence Pow is generally unknown, even in the indie world, which is a shame considering how great this band is. They describe themselves as progressive rock that aims to reach limits that not even Queen dared to (I think I remember this being on their website at some point...). It's an odd and confusing description that I dont fully agree with, but it gives you an idea of how weird the band is.

Originally becoming known to me through another fine band that shared the same (now extinct) Spongebath label, Self, I fell in love with CFP almost immediately. These are the Plans knocked me off my feet with catchy quirkyness, crazy voices, rockin' guitars and synths. A little jarring at first because of odd transitions in songs, it didn't take long to realize CFP was a breath of fresh air amongst bands that all sounded the same.

"Experimental Times" starts off the CD with beats, record scrapes, and many la-dee-das. The third track, "I'm Travelling," reveals their electonic playfullness and infectuous choruses. "The Great" is a song about a girl that has a crotch that's "her only productive utility." "57.5 bars" satirizes the art of songwriting with the lyrics, "This is the song / a pretty short song / rhyming words with same words." Track 9, "Periodic Table," has a voice similar to Stephen Hawkins' rapping about science halfway through. Need I say more?

I really love this CD, and since it doesn't look like Self will be releasing any more music since their guitarist died, CFP is the next best thing. Both bands are ones who arn't afraid to step over boundaries and have a good time doing so.

UPDATE: CFP has changed their name to Apes & Androids and will release their new album shortly.
