A very good book for introducing young children to birding,

I love the natural world and birds in particular. As an avid bird watcher (or "birder") I have traveled to different parts of the world in order to see new species. The diversity and adaptation of birds never ceases to amaze me.
As a parent and grandparent I always look for ways to share my love of these winged wonders with my family. When my granddaughter turned 4 I bought her a large, stuffed, Emperor Penguin toy and a fluffy stuffed baby Penguin toy to go with it. In addition I sent several books along with the toys and this was one of them. It's pretty simple but it introduces young children to bird species that they would not normally hear about, such as the Kiwi and the Cassowary. The book contains photographs of these birds as well as other flightless and flying birds such as Egrets and Hummingbirds. It's a great way to introduce a young one to the huge range of bird sizes as well as habits and adaptations. I would have preferred drawings instead of photographs as I think that it would be more appealing to young children, but I admire the author for not anthropomorphizing the subjects as often is the case in animal books for children.
