Lots of Local Interest,

Since I live about ten miles away from the area where most of the stuff in this book happened, it's pretty interesting to me. I've done a lot of hiking and exploration in the area and so it's kind of fun to find out what someone else did in the same locations. The author also shares many interesting stories relating to prospectors who were his contemporaries or who came before him which make the book even more interesting. While it's clear that the author lacks a certain amount of polish, he does relate his stories in a manner which are captivating to those who bring an interest to the area (Death Valley, especially the area around Manly Peak) or the topic (prospecting and mining). If you live in the Death Valley area or if you plan to spend some time in the area, this book will probably be of interest to you.

A GREAT page-turning book filled with unbelievable stories. Easy read - bought it on a trip to Death Valley and couldn't stop reading it aloud in the car ride home - my passenger and I were so enthralled. Emmett's book seems to also have the same effect on everyone who borrows it. So glad that he wrote down his stories for future generations. Can't say enough good things about it!!!

This book is great in that you don't have to read it from front to back and can pick any chapter as each one is a little story.
I have used his clues and found many places that he talks about. Emmett and his wife now publish a quarterly magazine about Butte Valley. You can order it from them for $20 a year. The same kind of magazine used to be called "Butte Valley Bugle" and was organized by "Wild Bill"

Emmet is a thrilling story teller, and his tales have the ability to capture the reader and draw them into the tale. Simply left me in awe as he explains how he uncovered the trail to a lost mormon mine...

Emmett not only is a man among men, rugged, tough men at that, but also is a great storyteller. What's perhaps the most surprising about Emmett is that he tells amazingly enthralling true stories.
My only complaint about this book is that the last couple of chapters don't seem to belong there, and I would guess that the publisher pushed for them to be there to make the book longer. Up to that point, this book is great!

I enjoyed reading this book which gave me an understanding of the dangers and hardships of prospecting in the desert and mountains. It has kindled my interest in gold searching, and if I ever find any gold, I just may write a book also!
