4.0 out of 5 stars Cannot understand why this album is not bigger than it is!!!, June 5, 2005
This review is from: These Are the Facts of Life (Audio CD)
I regard 'obscure' artists with suspicion, because you just don't know what to expect when they unleash their work on an unsuspecting world. It could be something very good but rather under-publicised, or something simply dreadful and useful only to banish the artist further to the depths of obscurity.

Danny Madden's "These are the facts of life" belongs to the former.

I know very little about Danny Madden the artist, so my review is based simply on this piece of work and an excellent piece it is too; really deserving its place in "the ones that got away" hall of fame! It is a worthy addition to any true Soul/Funk/RnB collector's library - music you buy for you - and enjoy!

I have very often purchased entire albums for the sake of one or two tracks and have lived with skipping the rest. Not so with this album. I listen to all of it! Every track comes across as having been written and produced properly. Even the more up-tempo tracks like "1st world people" and "The Secret" easily grow on you. "Love controversy" is Danny's answer to the 'Loose Ends' track of the same title.

There are 3 tracks I would recommend for samplers to get a feel for this artist:

"What in the world" - a mid-tempo track with clean instruments and clear vocals.

"Ain't nobody home" - more energetic with excellent rhythm

"The Secret" - high energy compelling beat.

The good:
Every track is well written and merits its time on the CD player
It is not easy to find a track to skip - and I am really picky about what I will listen to. Collector's item.

The bad:
Album is probably a bit dated now. The tracks are excellent so I worry that they make potentially rich pickings for contemporary boy-bands to butcher!

Verdict
If you are a collector of Soul/Funk/RnB, this album is a worthy addition. If you are more into contemporary artists, then the music might sound a bit dated. I am a collector and heartily recommend this album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Certainly worth more than a penny, November 23, 2006
This review is from: These Are the Facts of Life (Audio CD)
Few people have heard of him, and that's a shame, because he's got some nice stuff here. Tracks like "Together", "Love Controversy", and "What In The World Can Change Your Mind", are nice pieces of earthy, midtempo soul.
