5.0 out of 5 stars Honest and understated, August 30, 2011
Honest, understated, and a realistic autobiographical account of the special forces training and activities during WWII.
There are dozens of SAS books, but this one stands out; this one is not all gung-ho, this one is written with empathy, it skips the gruesome realities of killing, and it focusses on the frustrations of a soldier: logistical errors, opportunistic victories, and the inevitable loss of comrades.
War books are horribly addictive for some reason. This book is somehow different, written with clarity soon after the war, it's honest and not egotistical. I recommend it - if you have any books about soldiering, you should also have this one.
