2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the "original" original!
I qualify this all by saying that I really DO enjoy Bette Midler and that I loved the album version of this song. The remixes, though, pale by comparison to Bette's tongue and cheek original. Of course even the album original can't match the true genius of its songwriter, Kirsty MacColl. If you want to experience the true emotion and sense of humor behind this song,...

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Smash on Billboards' Club Play !, February 13, 2002
This review is from: In These Shoes (Audio CD)
Bette's lastest flirtation with dance music comes in form of this Kirsty MacColl penned classic. Featuring 7 remixes all different to the version featured on the album 'BETTE'. The remixes are all a cross between hard house and salsa. My favourite mixes would be the more radio friendly tracks 1 & 5.

It will keep you moving and dancing to the original disco diva and soul queen for hours to come. Total FUN and gosh doesn't she look simply DIVINE in the shoes she's pictured wearing on the single sleeve ...

5.0 out of 5 stars "In These Shoes"-Bette at her best, July 25, 2001

If anyone happens to have the maxi-single to "I'm Beautiful" which is also by Bette, this one is better. If anyone wants it don't get it, get this one. This maxi-single kicks butt. The remixes are all great and are truly party songs. I let some of my friends who are also in their teens hear them and they were like these songs are great. So now we play them at parties we go to and people love them and want to buy this cd. It's great and rather you like Bette or not, you will come away from this cd feeling happy. Some of the remixes are Latin-tinged and others conjunct with the hip-hop music of today. Get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Divine as always!, May 15, 2001

This album consists of seven remixes of a song from Bette Midler's latest album, "Bette," released October 2000. "In These Shoes" is a funny, Latin-y tune penned by the late Kirsty MacColl, and was one of the brightest spots on the CD. The remixes are wild and very lively, and should get a LOT of play at clubs everywhere. This recording should show that Miss M is still out there and still outrageous! Sexy, sassy, and yet practical - you want me to do WHAT "In These Shoes?" To paraphrase Nike, just buy it.

Of course even the album original can't match the true genius of its songwriter, Kirsty MacColl. If you want to experience the true emotion and sense of humor behind this song, check out Kirsty's "Tropical Brainstorm" album. Back to the remix, the third track is the most fun with kind of a retro-disco feel. All of the other hardcore dance stuff is worthless in my book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dance Fodder..., May 23, 2001
This review is from: In These Shoes (Audio CD)
While listening to the album from which this song hails--'Bette'--I knew that "In These Shoes" would be chosen as the single to remix for club play...And here it is. With a topical and cinematic lyric that possess so much personality (courtesy of the absolutely great but regrettably late Kirsty MacColl) I was really hopeful that a mixer who was up for challenge of producing a mix as interesting as the song might get the job. Out of the two who did get the job, Jonathan Peters and Mark Picchiotti, only one has come close to meeting that challenge. Peters does have a sparkling resume, with work for Whitney Houston being among some of the most memorable club contributions in the past few years. However, his work here is simply ...and out of context. The almost-hardcore techno treatment (especially on his dub mix) he gives Bette only highlights his lack of inspiration--or time, I'll be fair--for this project. Is it still shocking or funny to hear an intelligent woman in her fifties spew "Shut the @*$* up!", as she does repeatedly in Peters' Soundfactory Mix, for no reason at all? Where was Pablo Flores and his Latin groove or Junior Vasquez with his humor and drama? Those integral elements of this song are faultily missing. But alas, the entire cost of this item will not be lost should you decide to invest. Picchiotti's disco turn on the mix is infused with some of that humor and color that was left on Peters' cutting room floor. I'm sure diehard Midler fans, as I too might be accused of being, will rush to reward this fodder with a five star rating...But I tried to warn you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Re-mixed Review!, May 29, 2001

Maybe Bette will get the hint when this reaches #1 on the Dance Chart! The original was perfect! It has a latin feel and did not need a Spanish Remix by Flores. If he did remix it, it would probably sound like the radio remix here. I played Mark's Heels To Platforms Mix at work, and all the young techno crowd went crazy, saying who is this! It is disco-techno, sounding reminicent of Soul Searchers big club hit, Can't Get Enough. They really know what's hot! There is the hard core techno Sound Factory Dub in which Bette shrieks her old famous words...7 mixes, all great! Can't wait for the next remixes! Hopefully on That's How Heartaches Are Made, or perhaps, to make it an easier task, Just My Imagination.
