Biography

If you think you know Paolo Nutini, think again. His two million selling 2006 debut album, THESE STREETS, established the young Scotsman as a leading light amongst the new wave of singer-songwriters. Paolo’s extraordinary follow up, SUNNY SIDE UP, casts him in a whole other light.

Written by Paolo Nutini and produced by Paolo and Ethan Johns, SUNNY SIDE UP, is a richly idiosyncratic, passionate and… Read more in Amazon's Paolo Nutini Store

Editorial Reviews

From Amazon.co.uk

19-year old Scottish singer/songwriter Paolo Nutini sounds older than his years on his debut album, These Streets. It's not just his careworn, smooth-as-sandpaper voice, either (although, admittedly, it does help). It's more to do with the maturity of the lyrics, and the casual soulfulness of his delivery. "Last Request" is more the work of a vintage Motown singer than a teenager from Paisley, and it's to Nutini's credit that he carries it off with aplomb. And rather like the soul singers of previous generations, he manages to sing without a hint of hypocrisy about his own sexual exploits ("Jenny Don't Be Hasty") while also questioning his girlfriend's fidelity ("Alloway Grove"). It's the fact that he's so frank, and even a little bit naive, that he manages to get away with it. And though the stripped-down tunes on These Streets don't always immediately grab the listener (the title track, in particular), the songs where Nutini is accompanied by a full band often manage to evoke sunny-day American soul ("New Shoes", for example). This is a strong debut, and considering Paolo Nutini's tender years, bigger things can be expected of him in the future. --Ted Kord

5.0 out of 5 stars So impressed!, September 18, 2006
This review is from: These Streets (Audio CD)
I haven't been so excited to get a CD in years. I'll warn you ahead of time - these songs will be stuck in your head... you won't be able to stop singing them silently.

This guy is refreshing - in that I haven't heard anything NEW or DIFFERENT in years. Whether you're my age, or the age of my daughters (early 20's), you'll find this music addictive. When I first heard Paolo on the Craig Ferguson show, I was hooked. When sharing with my daughters they said, "Mom found really cool music". (not the typical response I get)

I'm in my 40's and some of these songs bring back those emotions from youth that life pushes far into your memory's recesses. You won't believe that this singer/songwriter is just 19.

This is the only review I've ever submitted - and I'm on Amazon daily. He is just THAT good.

Paolo Nutini makes a huge splash with his debut album, These Streets. Paolo displays a natural talent for singing and songwriting; and his voice is rich and full of masculine warmth. Just one listen to this CD proves it!

The track set begins with "Jenny Don't Be Hasty." Paolo sings with the style of a seasoned pro; this number about a woman he wants makes a strong start for this album! The electric guitar, drums and percussion make a good musical arrangement. "Last Request," another highlight of this fantastic album; lets Paolo sing with great sensitivity of how he wants one last time alone with a woman who doesn't love him anymore. The melody charms me with its beauty; and I predict that you will enjoy "Last Request" very, very much.

"These Streets," the title track of this album, begins with some pretty awesome guitar; and when Paolo comes in this number takes off like a jet! Paolo laments losing his childhood because in retrospect he realizes things were simpler for him back then. The guitar works wonders for this number; and the guitar alone with Paolo's voice makes "These Streets" a true masterpiece!

"White Lies" has another beautiful arrangement for the guitar; and "Loving You" lets Paolo sing happily of finding his one true love. Paolo also shows off his wide vocal range, sometimes singing a few words in falsetto--flawless!

The album ends with "Alloway Grove." This number starts with the drums and guitar; and when Paolo comes in he sings this perfectly! Paolo sings of his disappointment that the girl he loves is no longer there for him. The upbeat melody belies the sadness of the lyrics; but it all works well for Paolo and his musicians. The lengthy number works well.

The liner notes include the lyrics to all the songs except for some of the lyrics to "Alloway Grove;" and the artwork impresses me. We get some good shots of Paolo, too.

Paolo Nutini's first album sounds like a tour de force of a very seasoned talent--which is truly phenomenal since he's still rather young and this is only his first CD. I highly recommend this CD for fans of comparatively mellow rock and pop vocals.

Great job, Paolo!

Bought this album for wife's birthday in early February and have since listned to it at least 50 times. My wife has probably listened to it 500 times by now. We just love it.

To me the appeal lies partly in Nutini's vocal qualities (reminiscent of Paul McCartney), partly on the intelligence of the lyrics (clever rhymes and unusual word choices), and partly the authoritative, graceful arrangements. Each song is a finished work, a burnished gem, not some work-in-progress thrown in to fill space.

Thematically, the songs as a group convey the youthful joy in love and sex, innocence and sincerity, compassion and optimism--much like the best of that golden era of 1967-1973 when most of the really good rock-pop-r&b was being played on the then-new FM stations. Stylistically, I'm hearing The Beatles, Michael Bolton/Otis Redding, and maybe a little of Van Morrison. In short, it's highly original yet warmly familiar.

My favorite tracks are Last Request, These Streets and Millions, but there's not a lemmon in the bunch. I haven't been able to repeatedly listen to an album without getting good and sick of a few of the songs since about 1973. That's why I say it's the best album in decades. My wife and I are looking forward to the next one. I hope his touring schedule isn't making it too difficult to write. If it takes him a while, it will be worth the wait.
