Reminds me of...WHO F***ING CARES!!!,
By Rian (Seattle, Wa) - See all my reviews

Yes they sound like a mix of bauhaus and the faint. Yes they have been accused of ripping off everyone from joy division to depeche mode to interpol....But does it really matter?
These songs are infectious and She Wants Revenge puts on a live show that will erase all reservations about embracing this goth-rock revival.

A fun new entry into the retro post-punk movement,
By SandmanVI (Glen Allen, VA United States) - See all my reviews

Given their penchant for writing high-quality, post-punk inspired music, the comparisons to Interpol are inevitable and also fairly accurate. SWR, like the fashionable boys from the NYC, churn out swanky, dark songs underpinned with nervous anxiety and a paranoid sexuality. However there is a rather major difference between them that no one has mentioned... I mean beyond the cosmetic difference that SWR uses more electronics. On the heels of their excellent first album, Interpol clearly became embarrassed by all of the direct comparisons to Joy Division and shifted their sound for the 2nd album - a disappointing album in my opinion. However She Wants Revenge seem perfectly happy in their skin regardless of whether it is viewed as derivative. Their comfort comes through on the album in the form of a confident, although somewhat introspective, swagger.
All of the songs here are upbeat and danceable despite their Goth overtones, so anyone interested in mildly subversive music should have fun with this. It isn't a particularly complex album in concept but it makes up for it in attitude. Atmospherically it's a good album but lacks the depth of true postpunk ala Bauhaus/Tones On Tail, Cure, JD, etc. Any linkage with The Smiths is way off the mark (and any subsequent dissing of The Smiths by other reviewers is even further off the mark). In summary, this is bound to be a hot band and I greatly anticipate the full length.

Next Big Thing,

I've been hearing this band on Sirus Radio (Left of Center) for the last few months, and I feel in love with "Tear You Apart". After searching the net forever with no results they finally started popping up on my searches latly. And now they have a full lengh album coming out soon. This band is truly going to be big. I too love NIN and this band has me just as excited, not that they are alike, but it's a whole new sound, something fresh, dark, and full of angst. Goth chicks are going to love it! I expect we'll hear a lot from them to come. There are now five songs from their new album playing on Sirus on regular rotation and it's only a matter of time before they hit FM.

Great Debut,

All four songs on this single are original (no remixes) and excellent. They sound a lot like Interpol, but more electronic, and it is much darker both musically and lyrically. At the time of writing this review, they have no full-length album, but they have another single with the songs "Out of Control" and "Sister" on it, and I highly recommend that one as well.

how is this interpol,

How can this be a rip-off of interpol when interpol bores me to death and she wants revenge is the funnest band i've heard on the radio since high school? I love Joy Division, Bauhaus, Depeche Mode and all the other bands people say this sounds like and now with She wants revenge we have even more music like it! So how is that a bad thing? Anyone who dislikes a band because of 'genre-hopping' or whatever that means is one of those elitists who doesn't even like music. They just didn't "discover" she wants revenge before the radio did so now they won't let themselves enjoy it no matter what.

It kind of sounds like DeVision, Interpol, Depeche Mode, Joy Division. If you like these bands, you will certainly love She Wants Revenge.
SWR has quality. They know what they are playing, and they know what you feel when you listen. No doubt!

Great Live Show, Great EP,

I first heard She Wants Revenge on the local alternative radio station. My first impressions were Joy Division meets Interpol. I saw them at a local club in Cambridge MA and was very impressed with how good they were live.
I bought the EP at the show. I'll be buying the full length.

And that doesn't mean I don't love any of the other bands they are being incessantly compared to. Liking Interpol or Joy Division or Bauhaus and also liking SWR are not mutually exclusive! This is my favorite type of music and I am happy when there is actually a new artist that is good at it. They are great live and their music is infectious. Just try listening to Black Liner Run and NOT dancing.
The people who are slamming them for sounding too much like musicians who came before them really should start living in the present. After all, the chances of Ian Curtis rising from the dead to reclaim this genre as his own are pretty slim.

A must for serious SWR fans.,

For the serious fan of She Wants Revenge, they cannot go wrong with this EP. Assuming that most people reading this review at this point are familar with their album, i'll concentrate on the B-sides.
Black Liner Run is a interesting track with a opening I always really enjoy hearing. However you can clearly see why its a b-side and needed to remain so. However Spend the Night is a must have track that is one of my favorate from out of all their work. I think it could of been a single all on its own, and can only imagine how enjoyable some good dance mixes would of been on this beautiful track built by twinkling, cold synth sounds. |
