The author puts down the thoughts that many of us traditional folks think. He's writing to his children (or grandchildren) that they should suffer some hardships in their lives. He says he wishes they would lose games, not get picked, all the things most parents and grandparents tried to shield the kids from. Lee Pitts understands that to grow and to be a strong character that they must have failure. It's extremely well illustrated and it almost more like a poetry book. It's not a "downer" but instead, reading it gives you hope that someone worked to put these thoughts out for others to use. I gave my grandsons a copy and had the 13 year old read it outloud. Not sure he "got it" but hopefully some day he will. Excellent thoughts in these days of no accountability.

Awesome book! Love the illustrations and is so true of things long ago that children now days don't experience, and need to. Can't wait to share this with my Grandchildren.

Wish I'd known the correct age for the young person and that it was a (WONDERFUL) map for living a nice life. It is headed to my G'Grandkids.
