Book Description

0132299666 978-0132299664 August 27, 2006 3

Using a thematic approach, this concise survey explores the many and varied threads of American history-social, intellectual, cultural, political, diplomatic, economic, and military-from the arrival of the first native American inhabitants thousand of years ago throught the crisis following the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington on September 11, 2001.

Irwin Unger, a Pulitzer Prize winning author, wrote this book after discovering from his own experiences teaching American History at the University of California at Davis and at NYU, that a thematic approach was much more interesting to students than a purely descriptive one.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Maintaining his challenging "inquiry approach," Pulitzer Prize winning author Irwin Unger organizes each chapter around a specific question designed to challenge students to consider the complexity of the past. The classic coverage updated and expanded, this edition offers a more contemporary approach while remaining an interesting and absorbing introduction to American history. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

From the Back Cover

This book maintains Pulitzer Prize winning author Irwin Unger's challenging "inquiry approach," organizing each chapter around a specific question designed to challenge students to consider the complexity of the past. The classic coverage has been both updated and expanded to offer a more contemporary approach while remaining an interesting and absorbing introduction to American history. This edition represents a condensed, streamlined version (about one-fourth shorter than its predecessor), presenting coverage in a brief format to both facilitate readability and reduce the price of the work to students. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

2.0 out of 5 stars Egad, Nightmare Fodder, December 29, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Oh boy. Another book I was coerced into getting for classes, but I regret this one much more than the others. Though the book could use a better cover, it's really in need of an emergency editing. I found myself underlining horrendously incorrect sentences and misspellings while I trudged through the prose. I found it impossible to accept this book as fact with such simple errors littering the text. I really wonder if I somehow managed to get a first draft of the book with regular binding. I read the book for as long as I could stand. Maybe someday I'll flip through and see what I missed.
