They Became Americans is a great resource book that can save hours of research time for beginner and advanced genealogical researchers. I wish this book was around years ago. This book is full of ideas, anecdotes, great photos and examples. It really helps make family history come alive! My kids were even interested in the Ellis Island photos and text!

What makes this book exceptional is that it doesn't explain the one right way to organize your family history data. The author knows that there is no one right way. Instead she shows you multiple ways and allows the reader to choose the one that will work at that point in their search, while making sure that you know that other methods exist if your needs change over time.

This is a superb, small, paperback book for all beginning genealogists. A good book to have at hand or even for your personal library for doing family research and understanding 'where' to look for records. Not overwhelming, an excellent read, you will use it many times over.

Considering the book is a little out of date, I think it is a very informative one. It is an interesting read and has a lot of information in it.
