Book Description

July 1, 1998
America is a nation of immigrants. Through naturalization records, genealogists, historians, and other scholars trace the immigration stores of individuals and groups that traveled from afar to call themselves Americans.

They Became Americans provides an accurate, readable, and interesting historical framework for the citizenship process. It suggests ways of finding naturalization records and discusses the weaknesses and strengths of the different types of records. If naturalization records are not to be found, They Became Americans points to a variety of alternative sources for finding immigrant origins.

They Became Americans is a great resource book that can save hours of research time for beginner and advanced genealogical researchers. I wish this book was around years ago. This book is full of ideas, anecdotes, great photos and examples. It really helps make family history come alive! My kids were even interested in the Ellis Island photos and text!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Complete Organizational Toolbox, March 19, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: They Became Americans: Finding Naturalization Records and Ethnic Origins (Paperback)
What makes this book exceptional is that it doesn't explain the one right way to organize your family history data. The author knows that there is no one right way. Instead she shows you multiple ways and allows the reader to choose the one that will work at that point in their search, while making sure that you know that other methods exist if your needs change over time.
