The title pretty much says it all. They Bleed Pixels is a really lovely little challenging game that consists primarily of difficult and elaborate platforming segments with simple combat; the combat often plays into the challenge or execution of the platforming as well, which I found quite fun.

If you've played Super Meat Boy, it's fairly similar, though the short levels of Super Meat Boy are replaced instead with massive sprawling platform complexes, essentially divided into little sub-levels through the game's checkpoint system. Kill a lot of enemies (especially with good combos) and you get the ability to make a little savepoint. The game is, of course, paced so that you basically finish what would've been a single level of Meat Boy between each save, more or less. All in all, I thought this execution was rather elegant, and the semi-ubiquity of save points made it much less frustrating when I was bad at videogames and died a lot on certain segments.

Stylewise, the game uses a lot of dark colours and outwardly simplistic sprites. Everything's got a nice little pixelised feel to it, and the game's soundtrack also lends itself very well to the mood of the game. Your mileage may vary with the soundtrack of course, as different people like different music, but I found it catchy enough to warrant a purchase. Sound effects in general were also snappy and fitting to what was going on, giving the little bouts of combat a nice, harsher feel.

All in all, though I received the game as a gift, I would totally buy it again if I were rife with disposable income. Its subject material is pretty far up my alley (I'm seriously considering calling service personnel to deal with that) and I was pretty surprised by how much fun I was having with it when I got into it. Play it with a controller and get ready for sore thumbs~
