The extraordinary story of the "Dorothy Day of Canada",
By
This review is from: They Called Her the Baroness: The Life of Catherine De Hueck Doherty (Hardcover)
I keep coming back to this book and never tire of learning
more about the beautiful Russian noblewoman who emigrated to North America after the Russian revolution. She founded the Friendship Houses in America -- forerunners of the civil rights movement -- and eventually made her way to Canada to found the Madonna Houses of charity throughout the world. Considered a saint by some and a charlatan by others, her story of a miserable marriage followed by divorce, single motherhood, a romantic marriage at midlife, and her developing contemplative life in old age holds many lessons for all of us. This is a popular-style biography with substance -- highly recommended! |
