This review is from: They Came in Ships (Paperback)
If you are, as I was, baffled by the maze of microfilm and sources involved in trying to track down your ancestors' ships lists, you need this book!! The author very clearly explains the how the films are indexed, the exceptions to the rules, etc. Perhaps the most useful aspect of this book is the way the author walks you through various examples of how to take whatever information you have about your ancestor and how to use the indexes to track down where to start searching for your ancestor's ship. I read this book cover to cover twice, then tackled the library, and finally accomplished something! I recommend it VERY highly. Since it's out of print, you may need to work to hunt down a copy, but you will be very glad that you did!

They Came In Ships,

This review is from: They Came in Ships (Paperback)
There is an unbelievable amount of information packed into this book and it is organized in a way that works for both the experienced and new genealogist. I had almost given up finding my immigrant ancestors in several lines I'm researching until I discovered this gem. By following the step by step information given here, I was able to find them all! Don't overlook the bibliography. The information in it alone is well worth the price of the book. Thank you, Dr. Colletta!

This book is not as inclusive as I had hoped.
While "They Came in Ships" is aimed at a wide audience if your ancestry is Italian you may find it to be more help than I did. Still I will keep it on my reference shelf to help my Slovak searching because it contains insights into immigration that are worth the purchase price.

Clear, concise and written to be referenced time and again. The resources are organized superbly. The bibliography is extremely helpful. For beginners, the flowchart at the back of the book that summerizes different approaches is invaluable. A quick easy read, then superb as a reference.

Book has more information than I expected. Each chapter has a title and subtitles for easy information look-ups. This book, in the Preface page, gave me information I did not know of. It lists Canada and Mexico for overland immigration. I always thought of New York City and Philadelphia Pennsylvania as ports of entry for my family, but now I have to also think Canada.
I had ordered two books at two different times by accident, so I gave one to a friend as a gift. He is using the book's information to search for his immigrant ancestors. I would highly recommend it to anyone needing to learn where and how to look for information.
