Great whodunnit book,
By Ami (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: They Did It with Love (Paperback)
Set in Greenwich Connecticut, this is a great whodunnit story about a couple who leave Manhattan for the suburbs. The main character Sofie joins one of the book clubs (which seem to war with each other -- the mom book club doesn't get along with Sofie's mystery book club) and begins to find out that every thing is not as it seems in this secretive town. When one of the members is found dead there is suspicion to go around. What's most interesting are the vivid desciptions of the women throughout this novel and also the social hierarchy that is so clearly laid out (worth as determined by one's husband's job or the house you live in). The mystery is laid out wonderfully and this is a fun read.

A real page turner!,

This was a very well written and compelling novel. The characters were amusing and engaging and the plot moved forward at a nice clip. It's the first "page turner" I have read in awhile. Plus a surprise ending.....Definitely recommend!

After Sophie's father died and left her a huge estate, Sophie and her husband decided to move from Manhattan to Greenish, Conn. In order to fit in, Sophie joins a neighborhood mystery bookclub. The book twists and turns around the 5 women and their husbands who are in the bookclub. After a couple of bookclub meetings, one of the women is found dead. Initially thought to be suicide, it soon becomes clear they were dealing with a Homocide. Alex, the husband of the dead women was the only suspect, but claimed adamantly he was innocent. Sofie, who had owned a mystery bookstore in New York, was known as an amateur sleuth and contacted by Alex to help prove he was innocent. Sophie plays detective, and works with the "real" detectives who are trying to prove Alex's guilt. Suspecions raise, and skeletons are brought out closets of these couples. The author did an excellent job of keeping the readers attention while intertwining the lives of the 10 people involved. Readers see inside the lives of the "rich and non-famous," and are given a surprised ending. I belive this book would be enjoyable for both men and women, and was a wonderful read for our bookclub. It is multi-layered which helped the discussion flow.

The end disappoints,
By
This review is from: They Did It with Love (Paperback)
This book is well written and engaging, unravels like a stage play and offers a lot of nice detail. Unfortunately the ending is a give-me-a-break kind of a thing, that does not make much sense.

I really enjoyed this book. Light but not stupid with a surprising twist at the end. It had me thinking "I really did not see that coming."Perfect for vacation or beach. It would also be a good bookclub choice.

Title does not fit the story; lame ending,
By Snow White "The pressure's on...let's cook so... (sunny southwest) - See all my reviews
This review is from: They Did It with Love (Paperback)
While the book is well written and held my interest, the ending disappointed me. I like to see justice for victims. Also I could not help wondering what the title has to do with story? None of the couples seemed particularly fond of one another.

When my book club picked this mystery, I swore to myself it would be my last and final bit of chick lit; that I would quit the book club once and for all, and would never again subject myself to books with lipstick, high-heeled shoes, or martini glasses on the cover. So I read this book expecting nothing. Happy to report that I am still in the book club. This little book was such a pleasant surprise, and is actually not a bad book club choice: it is a pleasant reprieve from many of the Debbie Downer/Oprah tales of bad things happening to good, strong women that we too often fall into a pattern of reading in book clubs. Rest assured, there are no good, strong women in this tale of nouveau riches of Greenwich, CT. Just acres of delectable marital dysfunction, snark, and an ending that actually took me by surprise. It's like the book equivalent of a B-genre movie that works.

Women's book club gets involved,

This is a unique type of "mystery". It starts as a neighborhood ladies' book club with the typical suburban wealthy ladies' exclusivity. The ladies have no qualms about setting standards for their members, even if it means exclusion from the club. There is not one empathetic character in this book; the women are equally questionable in their motives, even the "nice" ones. When one of the women is found murdered on her front lawn, several members get involved in trying to find out the identity of the murderer. Infidelity is rampant. A true surprise conclusion.

I enjoyed this and I'm glad to find a new author to read. I was surprised at the ending and now I wonder if I had read the book more slowly, I would have gotten a better clue. If you like a fun read without a lot of blood and guts, try this one.
