5.0 out of 5 stars A learning tool through adulthood. Helps mold character.
LOVE IT - LOVE IT - LOVE IT!!!!
This book has it all. This book teaches consequence as well as morality; it then shows an alternate solution to a bad/or thoughtless decision. It does all of these things in a very child friendly manner in a way that children can relate to and understand very easily.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nonsense
Love the title and the lessons in the book, but the writing is nonsensical and will confuse or bore young kids (mine are 3 and 5). Zany books are fun, but stuff like "Karl was like a king, but he didn't use his head so he couldn't do a thing" or "Sarabel was shy, but she didn't use her head, so others passed her by" make no sense to the kids. I get what it is trying to...

Since I grew up reading this book, I know first hand that it helped mold the person I am today. I still had my original hard cover copy that my mom used to read us, until I recently lost it in a move. I was heartbroken, I wanted my future children to benefit from this book like I did.

I was estatic when I found it on Amazon. I not only bought 2 for myself to save for when I have kids but I buy one for any baby shower attend. I think this book is a must have for any child! I know my children will benefit from this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ageless and Timeless, November 16, 2000

This review is from: They Didn't Use Their Heads (Paperback)
The number of stars this book deserves is countless! "They Didn't Use Their Heads" was first published in 1960, and my mother gave it to me as a gift in 1964, when I was seven years old. Throughout the years, I've often reflected on this book--pondering its simple, yet profound, lessons and wondering if I'd ever find it again. Well, in the *infinite* wisdom of the publisher, it's back! This truly priceless and beautifully illustrated book speaks to children of *all* ages: Its lessons will remain with you always. This book is a treasure and should be hardbound and displayed proudly on your bookcase among your other prized literature. Better yet, place it conspicuously on your coffee table for visitors to read: People are never too young nor too old to learn... and to grow... and, well, maybe even learn to "use their heads"...

I'm a Media Specialist in an Elementary School. This is an excellent book to share with children K-3. I bought this with the hope that it would model good behavior and good manners. It did, and it does.

I get what it is trying to say and can explain, but the kids the kids are the ultimate judge of whether the book is engaging and they just ask for other books. A version with sentences that make sense would be great.

This is a cute book to use in teaching children how important it is for them to think before they act. Works well with Character Education. Each page can lead to open discussions within the classroom.

3.0 out of 5 stars Language a bit quaint, August 7, 2011

I bought this for my 6-year-old with a specific intention: getting him to think more about his actions. But the language is a bit quaint, or dated. The illustrations are just B & W, so that wasn't very attractive for him either.

This is a fun books! It's a bit long, but my 3 1/2 year old really enjoyed it. It was fun to talk about and lead to other discussions. After reading it several times, he even related it when we were out and about to something I asked him not to do. Good book!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not for small children, February 9, 2011

This review is from: They Didn't Use Their Heads (Paperback)
I was looking for a book that would teach my small children (3 & 5) some cause & effect relationships. If you act this way...this happens. I agree with the other reviewer that said that this book just doesn't make sense to small children. The pictures are all black & white, and the writing isn't clear. I wanted so badly to love this book when I ordered it after reading the rave reviews, however, it just didn't cut it.
We do, however, LOVE the Julia Cook books. Each story addresses a very specific topic (Tattling, Interrupting, etc) and then offers ways to help stop that specific behavior. The stories are relate-able and clear to small children, unlike this book.
