Praise for "They Felled the Redwoods", October 10, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: They Felled the Redwoods: A Saga of Flumes and Rails in the High Sierra (Hardcover)
I bought this book at a gift shop in the Sequoia National Park after skimming it for a few minutes. It was pricey (about $30) but I could tell right away it was a winner. I was not disappointed. The book is worth it just for the photographs alone. The reader is transported into another time and another way of life. I was captivated by the huge collection of stunning photos and the wonderful history and anecdotes that accompanied them. This book is definately a winner.

Balanced, Well Documented and Entertaining, August 12, 2005
This review is from: They Felled the Redwoods: A Saga of Flumes and Rails in the High Sierra (Hardcover)
An informative and entertaining account of the lamentable (hindsight being 20/20) business of logging California's redwood forests, circa 1880s-1910.
The book was written in 1966, but the maps and area descriptions are so detailed that you can still easily find the areas described and view the destruction (go to google.earth.com for a satellite view of the Hume Lake and Converse basin areas).

Fascinating!, April 17, 2003
This review is from: They Felled the Redwoods: A Saga of Flumes and Rails in the High Sierra (Hardcover)
This book is a 'must-read' for anyone interested in the Sierra Redwoods. The photographs are fantastic--some of the few I've seen that really do the Big Trees justice. They truly bring the time and the logging process alive. The text is helpful, informative and interesting to read. I used this book as part of my research when I wrote my historical novel RIDING THE FLUME--without it I don't think I could have written my book. Thank you, Mr. Johnston!
