fascinating read. a must for classic film buffs., December 30, 2011
This review is from: They Had Faces Then: Annabella to Zorina, the Superstars, Stars and Starlets of the 1930's (Hardcover)
A friend of mine found a copy of this book in the back of a small theater. During the run of the latest show, I spent my free time leafing through the beauties and stories contained on the pages, and I must say, although I've always professed my love for older movies, this book put me to shame for my lack of knowledge. Biographies on any lady in showbiz from groundbreaking leads/headliners like Greta Garbo and Shirley Temple to one hit wonders like "what's her name" from "that one movie".
No way in hell I'd buy it NEW for the price they're asking (I'm poor, what can I say?), but I wouldn't mind picking up a copy for 6-10 bucks... A true piece of American history and a must have for any theater/movie studies class, movie buff, hipster know-it-all, feminist or just plain old cinephile. Whether you just casually flip through of read every word on every page, this book will give you a (re)new respect for the time when black and white was king and sound was a threat.
If for no other reason then to open your mind to older movies and actresses you may never have heard of, this book is worth the 4-6 bucks plus shipping.
Have fun learning about the best time in acting and cinematography. You wont regret your decision.
