A Must For Monkees Fans!,
By A Customer
This review is from: They Made a Monkee Out of Me (Paperback)
This book was a delight to read! Any fan of the Monkees and/or Davy Jones will love this book. Davy's wonderful sense of humor really shines through here. He is not only funny, but honest in how he presented facts dealing with certain aspects of his career, co-stars, relationships, etc., which were sometimes sensitive subjects. My hat goes off to Davy. More autobiographies should be written like this. Davy's a true gem!

This is a fun read, chock-full of anecdotes, tidbits, and Davy's self-deprecating humor. Definately worth the bucks, if you can find it. He doesn't sacrifice facts to spare himself when he has behaved badly, which in my opinion is proof of class when writing a GOOD autobio. I reread it periodically, something I do with very few other books.

I was 12 years old when I received a copy of Davy's book THEY MADE A MONKEE OUT OF ME. It has left a lasting impression with me. I have found it to be extremely informative regarding Davy's past as well as regarding the truth behind The Monkees. Davy keeps the reader interested by using humorous anecdotes and wild stories to illustrate his points. It's a must-have for any die-hard Monkees fan.

Jones covers his life before, during and after The Monkees, but don't expect a lot of down and dirty stuff here. Just a decent biography about a guy who got sucked up in a tornado of fame, then tried to piece things together after it was over.

Davy's autobiography from 1987,

This review is from: They Made a Monkee Out of Me (Paperback)
I first got to read a copy of this book when it came out in 1987, I had borrowed a friend's and really enjoyed reading it as a teenager. Then a few short years ago, approximately 15 years later, I got bitten by the Monkeemania bug again. I purchased a copy on Ebay and reread it. Unfortunately, I have not read davy's updated autobiography (Daydream Believin') which is sold on his website, to see the differences between the two.
This book is overall interesting to read for most any Monkee fan. Davy gets quite personal about his own rise to fame. Davy mentions his naivite about being managed and getting ripped off by those around him and some very personal details about his relationships with women. It is illustrated on almost every page: I love all the great pictures, various newspaper clippings and odd items like checks send to Monkee Davy for amount 0. There are parts where Davy seems bitter, but in general it is a positive read and he has kind and humorous things to write about his 3 fellow bandmates. Davy seems to skip over a lot of the frenzy of the Monkees era and provides many interesting details of his early life (growing up poor in Manchester with a close nit family) and then his struggles as an entertainer in the 1970s. I think including many family photos of his kids and wife adds a nice touch. Davy has a section of his autobiography where he comments on other famous people such as Keith Moon, Jan Berry, Ronald Reagan and Sally Field. Overall, while I enjoyed Micky Dolenz' book better, because it was more humorous to read in many respects, this book is definitely a worthwhile purchase for a fan. Given that in mind, this book is still a must for a Monkee enthusiast's collection. A fair price for this book is $15, and if you look around online, and take your time, you can get it for that price.
