5.0 out of 5 stars The Good Kind of Mindless Dribble

I like the Disco Biscuits. I found their precious little band name a little off-putting, but I eventually listened and I like them. I know it's a big insult to a don't-call-us-a-jam-band band to say this, but, I like their studio albums better than the live stuff I've heard. This one in particular- which I understand serious Disco Biscuit fans don't consider to...

3.0 out of 5 stars not representative
i recently have gotten 'into' the disco biscuits, having seen them a few times and bought/digested their cd's. i think they are a very interesting band, and certainly the wave of the future in terms of the jam-rock scene. let me say that this cd is not representative of their live sound at all, which is why i give it a three. it is a very good cd, if a little monotonous...

This one in particular- which I understand serious Disco Biscuit fans don't consider to be one of their better albums- I think has a really great feel. It's got that bouncy trippy trance vibe that reminds me of "Atom Heart Mother" or one of the other under-rated middle-period Floyd albums. Thumbs up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Consistenly Inspiring, August 15, 2005

is how I describe this album. I've seen plenty of great shows and there are numerous great jam band studio albums (Till the Medicine Takes, Mom's Kitchen, American Beauty (duh), Outside and Inside), but this is one of the best. It constantly rocks. The thing about the jam band studios is that you have to put them down for awhile and listen to live shows. Then go back to them. This one noticeably rocks like a show. I've even used it to spruce up crowds while DJing dub reggae sets. Biscuits just create a great sonic landscape. It doesn't meander. I never listened to this any way but stone cold sober, and there is a definite Odyessyian (?) character to it. Journey of the soul. Listen for it; you won't be disappointed.

i recently have gotten 'into' the disco biscuits, having seen them a few times and bought/digested their cd's. i think they are a very interesting band, and certainly the wave of the future in terms of the jam-rock scene. let me say that this cd is not representative of their live sound at all, which is why i give it a three. it is a very good cd, if a little monotonous at times, but their live sound is so fiercely apt that i hate to see them depart from it at all. this cd sounds very techno, with few instances of a clear-cut instrument playing. even the drums are often synthesized despite the fact that their drummer is incredible. i would have loved to have heard a few more real songs, and not quite as much experimentation. altogether, however, this cd is undeniably original and fun to listen to. get it, if only because it will stand out in your collection as truly unique. more importantly, though, go buy a ticket and see these guys.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is not a live show, May 3, 2001

No, this does not sound like a Disco Biscuits concert. Then again, it's not a live recording; it's a studio album, and it should be enjoyed as such. I think this is a great introduction to Bisco's fusion of jam rock and dance music and would recommend it to anyone interested in either genre. Also, it's just a really good disc without a single weak track. No, it's not a perfect recording, but it's a great start. The Disco Biscuits are one of the most creative improvisational bands working right now. All 3 of their studio albums have had completely different feels, and each gives an indication of the evolution of this band's music. "They Missed the Perfume" is a great album and makes me very interested to see where these guys will go next.

5.0 out of 5 stars SUPER, May 4, 2001

To tell you the truth I had my doubts about this cd. No acoustic drums??? Drum machine??? Yikes! Well, I bought it last week and I have been listening to it non-stop since. It is fantastic!! These guys are creative as hell! Each song is orchestrated brilliantly & there are some wonderful sections of synchronized improvisation (does that make since?!?) This is music for the 21st century. All rules are out the window! Someday I hope they leave the JP 8000 & the effect pedals at home and tour acoustically though because these cats can play!

4.0 out of 5 stars Spacey Studio Magic, February 3, 2002

This is a CD that is truly unique among others by artists in the Jam Band/Hippy-Hop/Psychedelic realm. The works of this album can only be produced in the studio, where track fading, complex effects, and just simple "spacëy-ness" are available and abused by this usually live band. This is jamming of a very original nature, though Mindless Dribble, the fifth track, is often just a little too much experimentation for the atmosphere of the album. Is it worth getting? Definitely.

2.0 out of 5 stars ehh..., September 3, 2001
This review is from: They Missed the Perfume (Audio CD)
They missed the perfume, I missed the jam. If you are looking for intelligent, creative, and innovative jambased music, get the disco biscuits' first album (Uncivilized Area,) cuz you're not going to find it here. All it is, like everyone before me has said, is a bunch of electronica poorly put together on a cheap drum machine that gets repetitous pretty fast.

3.0 out of 5 stars trance fusion distilled to catchy electronica..., August 14, 2001

I had very high expectations for this record when I heard that it was going to be electronica oriented. Knowing what the Biscuits are capable of live and based on the strength of Uncivilized Area I was sure of an epic jam/electronic masterpiece. What we got instead, was a very respectable first attempt at this genre. This album flows very well and bubbles with electronic greatness at times. However, moments like the slow "jam" in Mindless Dribble seem like a quickly pasted in middle section - While the beginning of that song is one of the most creative pieces of music I have heard in a long time. Highwire is incredibly catchy and Spacebird is possibly the most solid song on the record. I was really anticipating this record, which may have harmed it in my opinion initially, yet I now enjoy it for the solid well-sequenced effort which it is.

4.0 out of 5 stars Did anyone mention you should see these guys live..., April 20, 2001
This review is from: They Missed the Perfume (Audio CD)
This album has a completely different feel than The Uncivilized Area and an altogether different sound than a show. But, nonetheless, I found that I haven't taken this puppy out of the CD player since I bought it. Highwire is a catchy tune. Spacebirdmatingcall is, well, spacey. The clinchers are Haleakala Crater and Home Again. Both songs give me the chills, which is my benchmark for a superior song. Mindless dribble is most definitely better live.

If you really want to hear the real Bisco, download some live mp3s or contact your friendly neighborhood taper.

3.0 out of 5 stars Different, but not exceptional, April 4, 2001

When I heard the Biscuits were recording a trance album entirely on a G4 with entirely electronic drums, I was like, "OK, that's cool. I've seen them do it live, they should be able to pull it off in the studio." That said, this is not a trance album, so do not be fooled by what it was pushed as. Instead, this is very much an electronica album. Highwire is an extremely catchy song, and Spacebirdmatingcall has just a sick, sick jam at the end. Unfortunately, it takes way too long to get there. The main difference that I noticed between The Uncivilized Area (which is just an awesome album) and this is that while this album may capture the current Disco Biscuits sound better, TUA covers their style of jamming much better. This album feels like what it is -- a whole bunch of clips strewn together. That really becomes obvious in songs like Mindless Dribble, where after the lyrics in the beginning the music just completely drops out, then they layer upon an ambient jam to build it back up. It loses its momentum and intensity all at once, something the song certainly does NOT do in its live incarnation. And the wierd little song at the end is very interesting because it returns to the Highwire theme (I've been told that it is actually the Big Happy, but I haven't heard any FT2K shows where they've played this) and then builds off that. But again, right near the end of the song it abruptly changes tone entirely and goes off into what seriously must be a variation on the Electric Light Parade. My problems with this album are that it lacks a) consistency, b) intensity, c) any real jamming, and d) a good concept of what it was trying to do. If you're loking to get into the Disco Biscuits, definitely check out the Uncivilized Area instead. If you are already into the Biscuits, you'll probably like this album, but I doubt you'll be wowed by it. It has been growing on me lately though, so maybe I'll change my tune eventually. And I would like to see them eventually make a trance album because I have no doubt they could actually pull it off, and it would blow my raving friends away.
