Book Description

November 15, 2010
Running Away is Vastly Underrated. At twenty-six, after a lover threatens to kill her, Cara runs away to Alaska. In the Last Frontier she lands in a love triangle with two alcoholics: Sean the martial artist and Chance the paraglider pilot. Nine years later, sick of love, she runs again, to backpack around the world alone. They Only Eat Their Husbands is a memoir of her yearlong trek, against a backdrop of reflections on her life and loves in Alaska.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bold and Gutsy! February 17, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Cara Lopez Lee's memoir of her physical and personal journey around the world is bold and gutsy. She yanks the rose-colored glasses off travel. Yet she also makes you eager to plan your own adventure. For example, while she reveals the gray landscape, sparse amenities and punishing trail of her Nepal trek, she also shares her priceless encounters with people and nature. With amazing candor, she fearlessly bares her physical and emotional self to her readers as if confiding in her most intimate friends. I admire her audacity. If you're a woman in your 30s or 40s, you'll especially love this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding read. Was hooked right away. November 17, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The author gives us a front row seat as she travels around the world alone and on a shoestring. We catch a glimpse of exotic places and cultures that most of us aren't aware of. The tale of her time in Nepal and her portraiture of the coterie of fellow trekkers that appear as she negotiates the Annapurna Circuit was great reading.
As if her solo trek wasn't interesting enough, she also gives us a brutally honest view of her inner journey towards real self awareness and watch her move away from toxic relationships with tragically broken men and towards something much better. I found myself laughing with her, yelling at her, sharing her frustrations and, most of all, rooting for her.
An extremely satisfying book, I look forward to whatever is next from Cara Lopez Lee.

5.0 out of 5 stars You Should Read This Book Too September 3, 2012
Format:Paperback
Loved this book and highly recommend it! Who might also like this book? Anyone who has a love of travel or a yearning to travel, anyone who has been in love and had a broken heart, anyone who wants deeper insight into life. Not only is this a captivating story, but it is also written with such intelligence that for the first time since college I was marking special quotes and passages I wanted to come back to or share with others.
I first met Cara at a local writer's gathering--a friendly smile in a room full of strangers. I went home and looked up her website and was intrigued. We exchanged email and her signature included an amazing quote from her book, which I loved enough to post on Facebook. From there we met again and exchanged our books....and then hers sat on my shelf for months. I was squeamish about reading about her personal life, frankly. Finally I decided I had to read it and picked it up with reservations. After the first few pages I could not put it down and before it was finished I was already recommending it.
Not only did I read about how courageous Cara was in travel and life, but I was impressed with the guts it took to write it all down for people to read about. I hope she writes another book because my response to this one is, "Tell me more!"

So my husband sees Cara Lee Lopez at a book reading and buys her book. He says she's a wonderful reader and thinks this book is a keeper. I'm on the lucky recieving end. First, I don't like many books, so I'm quite skeptical. I'm glad I read the first page. From the beginning, the story grips you and I can honesty say that as a fellow traveler in the world of the female psyche she gets a whole lot right. This is a gritty story too, one in which you get the sense you are exposed to a woman's inner workings as well as she struggles with the downright painful events and discouraging moments in her journeys with men in her life. This is not to say that she doesn't inspire. She has a way of tying it all together to give you the sense that in the end, after the lousy events with men, and the lovely events in travels, she finds herself in a quiet and secure way. Thanks Cara Lee Lopez. When is your next book out?

5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting read January 29, 2011
Format:Paperback
There is some great writing in They Only Eat Their Husbands, Cara Lopez Lee's travel and relationship memoir. I dog ear pages of books when a passage strikes me as particularly memorable or well constructed (never library books or borrowed books, please don't judge), but stopped in the first chapter because I realized I would have to dog ear the entire book. An insightful read - Lee isn't afraid to lay it all out there, from her sex life to a troubled childhood to farts. Single women will find her romantic entanglements especially interesting.

"Bald and puffed up from chemotherapy, with one lonely testicle as lost in its sack as a new divorce in a king size bed, he was even more difficult to resist than when he'd first turned on his blond, fit, oversexed charm."

5.0 out of 5 stars More than a travel memoir December 29, 2010
Format:Paperback
Cara is brutally honest, and sensitive in her portrayal of her growing up years and her toxic relationships with men. She survived circumstances that would have crushed a lesser person. Her round the world adventures are peppered with insights from the life she left behind. Cara learned the lesson of most travelers in that wherever you go, there you are. Her sense of adventure, and descriptions of where she was, are sensitive and brilliant. Cara takes us on a multidimensional journey into her soul and around the world. Thank you for sharing your story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kindred Spirits December 18, 2010
By Kelly
Format:Paperback
Cara's writing is real and honest and I could relate and empathize with her in all of her experiences, no matter if I was reading about a scene on the Annapurna trail, or a fight with a boyfriend. She drew me in and kept me with her, rooting for the right man or cheering her on in her world travels. Her book is an excellent read and inspiration for my own adventures.
