Editorial Reviews

2008 digitally remastered two-fer featuring a double dose of Edgar Winter on one CD: They Only Come Out At Night (1972) and Shock Treatment (1974). They Only Come Out At Night spawned the hit singles `Frankenstein' and `Free Ride'. The album collects 10 outstanding cuts, played with fervor by Edgar Winter, Chuck Ruff, Dan Hartman, Randy Jo Hobbs and Ronnie Montrose, along with guest artist/producer Rick Derringer. Shock Treatment begins with `Some Kinda Animal' and then moves into the excellent Blues torcher `Easy Street', which is painted with highlights from the substantial saxophone talent of Winter, not to mention some of his finest singing. Like They Only Come Out At Night, this recording includes a pair of haunting ballads, `Maybe Someday You'll Call My Name' and `Someone Take My Heart Away'. Beat Goes On.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally!!!, June 17, 2007
These albums made Edgar Winter a star, even though much of their success was due to the late Dan Hartman. The first hit off of "They Only Come Out At Night" was Winter's rocker "Frankenstein" which caused many to assume that the album was a "heavy" rock album. But the album has a wide variety of rock, blues, pop, and even country ("Round and Round" should have been a country hit). Also includes the hit "Free Ride" and minor hit "Hangin Around." Not a bad song on it. The only bad thing about the album is the cover. I really don't care for seeing Edgar Winter in drag. I remember many record stores used to display the back cover because many people found the front offensive. It probably hurt sales. But the music is great!

"Shock Treatment" was an outstanding follow-up. Rick Derringer replaces Ronnie Montrose on guitar, but does not contribute any songs or lead vocals. It is classic rock / pop at its finest. It includes the top 40 hit "River's Risin'" but several other songs received air-play and should have been big hits, including: "Easy Street", "Maybe Someday You'll Call My Name", and "Sundown." Not a bad song on it. The late Dan Hartman really shines on this album. His songs were more commercial than Winter's. He should have received equal billing in this group. Highly recommended!

This review is from: They Only Come Out At Night/Shock Treatment (Audio CD)
Edgar Winter had a limited amount of radio exposure but there were some great tracks on these two albums. Interesting liner notes as well make this disc something worth listening to, whether you heard 'Frankenstein' and 'Free Ride' back in the day or not.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Edgar Winter Group, November 29, 2007
Two classic Edgar Winter Group Rock-n-Roll albums. Great driving music. "Hangin' Around", "Free Ride" and "Frankenstein" are probably the most famliar from "They Only Come Out at Night". A nice blend of hard rock with a touch of R&B.

"Some Kinda Animal" is the first cut from "Shock Treatment". It and the last cut, "Animal", make great ends for a Rock-n-Roll sandwich with a liberal helping of Blues spread in between. Plenty of meat, as well.

Although I am also a big fan of Johnny Winter, there's no chance you'd confuse the two brother's music. Though much of Edgar Winter's stuff is rooted in R&B, it is much more Rock-n-Roll and much less Blues than his brother's work. Also, Rick Derringer's influence in the group is very strong on both of these albums.
