Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The Texas Rangers' reputation is based to a large extent on the fact that they constitute one of the smallest, most effective law-enforcement agencies in the world. There has not been a definitive history of the Texas Rangers since Walter Prescott Webb's in 1935. Though this work is not as detailed or extensive as Webb's, it is an important update that fills a significant void. The history of the Texas Rangers, from their origin through the Civil War, is broken down into five distinct periods of service. It is illustrated throughout with rare historical photos and documents, while 22 intriguing sidebars add depth and detail to the study. The introduction by T. R. Fehrenbach points out that "this book details the facts of the early Ranger force. It does not attempt to judge." A good basis for true, accurate history. It has also received the endorsement of the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum as the official history for the Texas Rangers' 175th anniversary. Fred Egloff

Review

With his already proven skill for combining images and words, Thomas Knowles has now created a wonderful history of the Texas Rangers. They Rode for the Lone Star is top-notch. (Dee Brown, author of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, The American West, and Conspiracy of Knaves )

The Texas Rangers have long needed a narrator who is both a meticulous researcher and who understands the politics of the South. They have needed someone who can distinguish the real Ranger from his superhero image and his cartoon caricature. They have found him in Thomas Knowles and his voice in They Rode for the Lone Star. (Don Coldsmith, author of the Spanish Bit saga, Tallgrass, and South Wind )

Tom Knowles has always shown a fine talent and dedication to the real West. Here in They Rode for the Lone Star he moves to a high, very high plateau of accurate research and first-rate writing. A top-hand read for those who truly care. Read it now. Enjoy it forever. (Max Evans, author of The Hi-Lo Country, Bluefeather Fellini, and The Rounders )

Unlike many partisan writers who take sides, especially today's politically correct revisionists, Tom Knowles avoids making judgments but points up the reality that three completely different cultures came together in Texas, and conflict was inevitable. (Elmer Kelton, author of The Smiling Country and The Good Old Boys and six-time Spur Award winner )

Dale L. Walker, author of Legends and Lies: Great Mysteries of the American West and The Boys of '98: Theodore Roosevelt and The Rough Riders (Dale L. Walker, author of Legends and Lies: Great Mysteries of the American West and The Boys of '98: Theodore Roosevelt a )

More About the Author

Thomas W. Knowles writes SF and fantasy short stories ("Curtain Call," "Luck of the Draw," "Captured Angel," and "Just the Right Light") that cross genres and mingle actual historical events with myth and legend. His award-winning non-fiction books--the Wild West series (edited with Joe R. Lansdale, published by Random House in the 1990s) and his ongoing multi-volume history of the Texas Rangers, They Rode for the Lone Star--chronicle the history of the American West, the American Indian cultures, the United States military, and 19th-century law enforcement organizations. His interest in these subjects stems from his heritage as a fourth generation Texan. His ancestors fought on both sides during the long and bloody conflict between the Comanche and the Texas Rangers, and on both sides during the American Civil War.

He is an honorary life member (along with Chuck Norris and Clayton Moore) of the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum in Waco, Texas, and served as historian in residence at that museum in 1997-1998 while he researched and wrote the first volume of They Rode for the Lone Star. He is also a partner in and the managing editor of two publishing companies: Lone Star Publishing (www.lonestarpublishing.net) and DarkStar Books (www.darkstarbooks.net).

5.0 out of 5 stars Proving The Legend, December 1, 1999
This review is from: They Rode for the Lone Star : The Saga of the Texas Rangers : The Birth of Texas-The Civil War (Hardcover)
Tom Knowles' "They Rode for the Lone Star" is a fascinating history of the early Texas Rangers. It is full of the facts on which the legendary tales are based. It is respectful but unbiased. And it is thoroughly engaging and immensely entertaining.

Filled with illustrations and annotations, it is not only a great read from beginning to end, but also the perfect book to pick up and browse when you have a few minutes. Unfortunately, it is so well written that if you start to browse through it, you may find yourself reading through to the end.

I am anxiously awaiting the second volume that brings the Rangers' history up to the present.

4.0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the next one. Great read., August 19, 1999

This review is from: They Rode for the Lone Star : The Saga of the Texas Rangers : The Birth of Texas-The Civil War (Hardcover)
Knowles' book is a must for anyone interested in Texas History. Knowles' weaves a history of the Texas Rangers perfectly into the blanket of Texas folklore, so that the reader can easily follow and understand the development and importance of the Texas Rangers. His descriptions of battles and the people who fought them are superbly done. Excellent discussion of frontier indian-fighting and Ranger strategy.

A real coffee-table book, but you won't want to let it rest there. Great photographs and illustrations. I'm looking forward to the post-Civil War Ranger History which I hope follows soon.

I thought the "Real West" couldn't get any better than Knowles' collaboration with Joe R. Lansdale (Hisownself) on 1994's engrossing _Wild West Show!_ I was wrong. Knowles gets down and digs up the real history of the Rangers, and pulls no punches. It's an honest, unblinking, exciting and amazing adventure through time, with excellent photos and commentary. Whoever says history is dull hasn't seen _They Rode for the Lone Star _. This is a coffee table books that belongs everywhere but. Cant wait for volume 2!
