For serious Hazell fans only!,

This review is from: They Say It's Gonna Rain - The Best Of (Audio CD)
What an odd CD this is, Only the fab You're My Rainbow and the mix of Whatever I Do could be called "Best of". The other tracks leave a lot to be desired. The version of They Say Its Gonna Rain is not either of the 2 well known Indian Summer or Zulu mixes, rather a Wet Weekend mix! and a 3 minute cut of Searchin' from the 12" mix would have been better as the 7" edit or the full 12" version. Add these to the awful duet with Darryl Pandy and a load of, what can only be kindly described as "fillers" and you have this CD. Goodness knows where they dug the master tapes up from, but they should have buried them years ago. Hazell has a great voice and has made some brilliant dance records. So if you want to hear her at her best, stick to the UKs Greatest Hits CD, which I believe is being released in the USA soon or try and find her original Maybe and Heart First CDs. Her Abba album is also worth a listen

The REST of Hazell Dean, more like,

This review is from: They Say It's Gonna Rain - The Best Of (Audio CD)
By no means is this a collection of her best songs or greatest hits. Most of the songs here were brand new at the time of release. I agree that this CD must be regarded as her third full album release. Hazell herself was against it at first, precisely because the title was so misleading. But it was a great opportunity for her to take aim at the American market, so in the end she agreed to go ahead with the project after all.
The main weaknesses of this release are the production and mixing. The vocals are too loud compared to the instrumental accompaniment, and the instrumentation and arrangements lack variation and imagination. The songs, too, are not as catchy as her earlier work, with the sweet Before The Loving Fades Away standing out as a noble exception. Nevertheless, this is an important element of any Hazell Dean collection. It represents the growth period she went through between her evaporation as an 1980s Hi-NRG diva and her re-emergence as a succesful dance entertainer in the late 1990s.
