A Filk Master, February 20, 2010
So if you're looking at this album, you're a fan of filk or a fan of one of the many things Tom sings about on this album, or already a fan of Tom Smith. If you're already a fan of Tom Smith, you can skip the reviews. You already know how great he is.
If you're new to filk, this is the man to listen to, his songs are hilarious, touching and thoughtful. Sometimes all at once. Comparisons come too easily with novelty music. If you're my age, it's too easy to compare anything really funny with Ray Stevens or Weird Al. Throw expectations out the window. Tom Smith is novelty music for people who love to read science fiction or fantasy, who make saving throws, who know to look for fnords.
Rich Fantasy Lives is my favorite song on this album, it sums up the dreamers, the role players, the fans of science fiction and fantasy in a lovely, sweet and wistful way. Following that, the very fun Illuminati Polka for fans of
Illuminati Deluxe Edition or
The Illuminatus! Trilogy: The Eye in the Pyramid, The Golden Apple, Leviathan.
Give it a try if you're new to filk. Tom Smith is a master. His work is riddled with puns and subtle jokes as well as laugh out loud humor. He is the man who made my husband give filk a chance, and still an absolute favorite of my whole family when we are taking road trips.

...and all around mensch, Tom Smith rocks, insofar as that big a geek can be said to rock. A great album by one of the best filkers out there, definmitely worth a listen or several.
