Book Description

January 15, 1999
John Sherrill was a skeptic as far as miracles were concerned. He lived in a suburb with his family, attended a mainstream church, and although he believed in the power of the Holy Spirit, he had never seen it manifested. Then the magazine he worked for sent him to investigate a strange biblical event that was cropping up across the country: the phenomenon of speaking in tongues. His search led him on an adventure that was to have profound personal results.

Since it was first published in 1964, They Speak with Other Tongues has sold over two and a half million copies. This Chosen classic chronicles the discovery of an investigative reporter that would ultimately change his life. As Sherrill relates the historical and biblical background of speaking in tongues, examines significant contemporary events, and shares his personal experience, he gives valuable insight into this gift of the Holy Spirit.

Review

For all those who would like to know what the discussion of "tongues" is about, here is the book to read -- Catherine Marshall

From the Back Cover

Are you curious or skeptical about this phenomenon?

More than forty years ago a young reporter for Guideposts magazine set out to gather information about a strange new occurrence happening all over the country. John Sherrill, a skeptic when it came to speaking in tongues and the Baptism with the Holy Spirit, was determined to retain his objectivity while digging out the facts. What he found would change his life.

This 40th anniversary edition of the classic that inspired millions of readers worldwide is the story of one man's journey from skepticism to a life-changing relationship with God. Filled with historical and biblical accounts of speaking in tongues, the book is a deeply personal and moving story of how you, too, can walk in the power of the Spirit day by day.

"For all those who would like to know what the discussion of 'tongues' is about, here is the book to read." -Catherine Marshall --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelent on many levels, April 26, 2004
This review is from: They Speak With Other Tongues (Paperback)
This book is an excellent treatment of the topic of the Baptism Of The Holy Spirt, with a special focus on tongues. It covers the scriptural basis as well as the authors own experience. One of the best books I've ever read, it's smooth and engaging while at the same time being hugely informative.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Pentecostal theology and history as well as as anyone who doesn't believe in the gifts of the Holy Spirt or that tongues are for today.

I was greatly skeptical when I was a new believer, regarding The Baptism of The Holy Spirit, I thought perhaps it was totally our right bananas, I was down right hostile to the idea. I only wish I had read this book sooner to save myself the time I spent doubting.

You can almost read it in one sitting it's so good, that is if you can stay sitting while you read it!

I would have liked to have seen the scriptures printed in-line with the text rather than referenced by number to the index in the back however that would effect the amazing flow of the book.

This review is from: They Speak With Other Tongues (Paperback)
I found an original edition of this book in the depths of my college's library and took it home on vacation. I started reading on the way there and could not stop! Well, I had to pause every couple pages to share it with my friend because it was so interesting, but you get the point. I highly recommend this to anyone at all interested in the Holy Spirit and tongues.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Must Read!" for every believer., March 22, 1999
By A Customer
This book is one of the best books I have ever read to lead one to the Holy Spirit. I personally have purchased 20 to 30 copies over the years and gave them to friends who have questions on the Holy Spirit and the phenomena of "Speaking in Tongues". The author, seeking answers, searches to find what the phenomena, Speaking in Tongues, is all about. The journey takes you through an adventure to finding the 3rd part of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. This literary work of art grips your heart as you realize the author is asking the questions that you have always asked. It is not a theologically dry work but one that keeps you wondering what is next. Enjoyment is a must in my reading and I truly enjoyed this one. I continue to enjoy it also because I've read it many times.
