Excelent on many levels,
This review is from: They Speak With Other Tongues (Paperback)
This book is an excellent treatment of the topic of the Baptism Of The Holy Spirt, with a special focus on tongues. It covers the scriptural basis as well as the authors own experience. One of the best books I've ever read, it's smooth and engaging while at the same time being hugely informative. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Pentecostal theology and history as well as as anyone who doesn't believe in the gifts of the Holy Spirt or that tongues are for today. I was greatly skeptical when I was a new believer, regarding The Baptism of The Holy Spirit, I thought perhaps it was totally our right bananas, I was down right hostile to the idea. I only wish I had read this book sooner to save myself the time I spent doubting. You can almost read it in one sitting it's so good, that is if you can stay sitting while you read it! I would have liked to have seen the scriptures printed in-line with the text rather than referenced by number to the index in the back however that would effect the amazing flow of the book.

I found an original edition of this book in the depths of my college's library and took it home on vacation. I started reading on the way there and could not stop! Well, I had to pause every couple pages to share it with my friend because it was so interesting, but you get the point. I highly recommend this to anyone at all interested in the Holy Spirit and tongues.

A "Must Read!" for every believer.,

This review is from: They Speak With Other Tongues (Paperback)
This book is one of the best books I have ever read to lead one to the Holy Spirit. I personally have purchased 20 to 30 copies over the years and gave them to friends who have questions on the Holy Spirit and the phenomena of "Speaking in Tongues". The author, seeking answers, searches to find what the phenomena, Speaking in Tongues, is all about. The journey takes you through an adventure to finding the 3rd part of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. This literary work of art grips your heart as you realize the author is asking the questions that you have always asked. It is not a theologically dry work but one that keeps you wondering what is next. Enjoyment is a must in my reading and I truly enjoyed this one. I continue to enjoy it also because I've read it many times.

This is a book I can highly recommend. I believe that whatever your beliefs on the issue of tongues you owe it to yourself to read this book.
I have been a Christian since 1975, and was taught against tongues in the first couple years of my Christian walk. I was well versed in, why tongues was not for today. Then in 1977 through a chain of events I ended up going to an Assembly of God Church. I was somewhat cautious of them as I knew they were of the Pentecostal persuasion. But from the very first service I attended I noticed an excitement in worship and over God's word (Bible) from the pastor and the members, that I had not seen in the other churches I attended. I really liked the church, the people, and the powerful preaching from the Bible, but, I still didn't agree with this "tongues" thing. Anyway, one Sunday evening before service, in August 1977, I went to the church altar alone and was on my knees in prayer, looking at the cross and thanking Jesus for dying for me. Then I asked the LORD to fill me 100% with His Holy Spirit (with or without tongues). So there alone at that altar I lifted that prayer up to God. Just me and Jesus at that altar. There was no expectation from me of speaking in tongues. I was NOT seeking tongues, but to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Almost immediately from the time I lifted that prayer to the LORD, to my surprise, I instantly started praying in tongues. As I did, I felt a release in my worship to the LORD and also such a fresh appreciation for the Cross (that Jesus would die for me). A river of tears of joy flowed from my eyes. That being said, I believe from that day I had a fresh desire to see others come to Christ and to grow in their Christian walk. So, do yourself a favor, and read this book. I believe God can use it to touch your life. It is well written, it shows the authors own battles with the "tongues issue" and gives a good scriptural basis for "speaking in tongues".

A great book,

I LOVED this book; while on vacation, I found myself reading it twice.Sherrill started out where I was; curious about spiritual gifts and attracted to them, but not sure where to start, and unsure about their meaning. It seemed that he had my disposition: questioning but interested. As the story unfolds, it is clear that these gifts are only a gateway to more, the "red door" Sherrill speaks of. I would recommend this book. Even though it was written nearly forty years ago, it has a freshness about it. I recommend this book to anyone interested in spiritual gifts, and interested in the recent history of the Pentacostal and renewal movement.

I was going to read this book for myself, but after a few pages I was getting really excited and my non-Christian friend came in, so I told her she had to read the first few pages at least. She read half of the book before she put it down! Amazing. Unbelief in the supernatural power of God is a big stumbling block to the secular mind. This book helps unravel that

A Classic - as relevant now as the day it was written,

This review is from: They Speak with Other Tongues (Paperback)
I first read "They Speak with Other Tongues" as a very young pastor, more than forty years ago. At the time I already believed in and practiced the gift of speaking in tongues. Still, I found this book to be a tremendous confirmation to my faith. It was especially interesting to me because the author was a non-Pentecostal and at that time the vast majority of people who spoke in tongues belonged to Classical Pentecostal churches. The Charismatic movement among mainline Protestant and Catholic churches was barely in its infancy. No doubt, this book served as a catalyst to arouse interest among non-Pentecostals in the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and thus helped birth the Charismatic renewal. Today, more than half of the Christians who speak with other tongues belong to non-Pentecostal churches.
I have read "They Speak with Other Tongues" several times over the years; on each of those occasions it has been a continuing inspiration. I've also bought many extra copies to share with friends. Anyone who wants to learn more about the experience of speaking in tongues will find much of interest here. The author presents his story in an honest manner which is both unassuming and convincing. Those who speak in other tongues and those who are only curious about the practice will both benefit from reading this classic. Although dozens of books on the same subject have been written since this one, I know of none that have had as great an impact. J. Stephen Conn, Author: "Growing up Pentecostal"

An objective and unoffensive review of Pentacostalism.,
By
This review is from: They Speak With Other Tongues (Paperback)
John Sherrill does a credible job as he traces the roots of Pentacostalism with particular emphasis on the phenomenon of speaking in tongues. It's an easy read without being simplistic. Although it includes Sherrill's eventual embracing of the Pentacostal movement, he does not seem to lose journalistic objectivity. While much of the material is anecdotal, there is thorough biblical basis and historical fact included. As a mainline religion subcriber, I have been both curious and skeptical about the business of speaking in tongues. This book has satisfied my curiosity and dented my skepticism. The Pentacostal movement is widespread in Christianity. Those who want a full prospective about Christianity today will be well served by reading this book.

Talk about changing a persons perspective,

This book totally caught me off guard. It examines the gift of speaking in tongues from the authors perspective and does an excellent job of convincing me that this gift is still being used in some areas that way God intended. Very well put together and compelling.

I expected another emotional stream of poor doctrine and touchy-feely arguments about experiences, but this book presents an objective study of the baptism in the Holy Spirit. It is well written as a true adventure throughout the realms of the Church and all its denominations.
