Book Description

December 1992 089950762X 978-0899507620
Once called the "perfect example of a homeless waif" by director Cecil B. DeMille, Junior Coghlan has been acting in movies for over 70 years. Perhaps best remembered for his role as Billy Batson in the Republic serial The Adventures of Captain Marvel, he has worked with many of the legends of Hollywood, such as Charlie Chaplin, Mickey Rooney, Jackie Cooper, and Shirley Temple. Also included are the stories of Coghlan's 23-year naval service, where he enlisted as an aviator during World War II and eventually rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Included are the stories of his eight years as the naval liaison on such films as The Caine Mutiny and Mr. Roberts. A filmography traces his career.

This review is from: They Still Call Me Junior: Autobiography of a Child Star; With a Filmography (Hardcover)
I live in the united kingdom, and as a 12yr old kid, i used to go to the saturday morning pictures at my local cinema, where the programme would always end with a republic, or columbia, picture serial in 12, or 15, chapters, no one could make these serials, like republic, and columbia, pictures they were great. my all time favourite, bieng .... the adventures of captain marvel... (1941)..... starring... tom tyler... as captain marvel... and frank coughlan jnr... as billy batson.... ive just added to my collection of books the autobiography of a child star.. they still call me jnr.. by frank coughlan jnr.. what a lovely book, what a great film actor.. he was a credit to the world of early motion pictures, a lovely man, with lots of lovely stories, about all the great films he appeared in and his life in the navy, this is a lovely book, written by a truly great film star, who is still remembered today , with great affection ,who sadly passed away september 2009. aged, 93. if like me you enjoyed these serials and films of the 1930s, and 1940s, then i can highly recommend this really lovely book, by a great star, of the early film serials and films. harold richards, redcar, united kingdom.
